PORTLAND – Oregon State made a furious comeback from down six to within two in the decisive fourth set, but they couldn't overcome an uneven hitting day in a 3-1 (21-25, 25-19, 25-17,25-20) loss at Portland State.

In total, the Beavers made 31 attack errors, hitting .122 as a team in the loss. OSU did improve defensively, totaling 8.5 blocks as a team to go with 71 digs.

Mychael Vernon bounced back from a tough second set to lead the team with 14 kills and made no errors in the final two sets. Izzi Szulczewski injected some much-needed enthusiasm into Oregon State's performance, finishing with 15 assists and nine digs over the two sets she played.

Oregon State's freshmen sparked the first set win. Kinley Swan and Laura Williams combined for five kills and four blocks with a .625 hitting percentage. Returner Vivian Light assisted the freshman duo with four more kills and Emma Villaluz contributed nine of OSU's 30 digs. The back-and-forth set saw the Beavs win four of the last five points to get a 25-21 win.

The Beavers overcame eight attack errors to win the opening frame, but they weren't able to get past the miscues in the second and third sets. OSU made 15 attack errors between the frames as Portland State pulled out 25-19 and 25-17 victories.

Vernon provided many of the Oregon State highlights in the third set, crushing four kills. She maintained her hot streak in the fourth, terminating eight more points while leading an OSU comeback from down six to within two. Unfortunately for the Beavers, her efforts weren't quite enough to prolong the match as Portland State won the fourth set 25-20.

The Beavs will attempt to rebound in Houston as they take on Alabama on Friday, September 2.
