Hjerpe, Melton Named Golden Spikes Award Semifinalists

CARY, N.C. – Oregon State left-handed pitcher Cooper Hjerpe and outfielder Jacob Melton have been named semifinalists for the 2022 Golden Spikes Award, USA Baseball announced Tuesday.
Hjerpe and Melton help comprise the list of 31, and Oregon State joins LSU, Cal Poly, Tennessee and Virginia Tech as the only teams with two semifinalists. The Golden Spikes Award is given annually to the nation's top amateur player.
Hjerpe is 9-2 this season and the Capay, Calif., native ranks fourth in the nation with 135 strikeouts, just four shy of the nation's lead. He sports a 2.36 earned run average, 0.88 WHIP and .188 batting average against.
Melton, meanwhile, leads the Pac-12 Conference with a 71 runs batted in this season, and finished the regular season ranked fifth with a .361 batting average. He also finished tied for second with 19 stolen bases and tied for third with 20 doubles.
Both have also been named semifinalists for the Dick Howser Trophy, which is also given annually to the nation's top player.
Media members, select baseball personnel and USA Baseball staff will now vote on the semifinalists; the finalists will be announced June 8. Fans will also be able to vote for their preferred semifinalists through June 6 by visiting GoldenSpikesAward.com. Fans can vote up to 25 times per day.
The winner of the 2022 honor will be announced on June 24 on ESPN.
