Competition set to begin this weekend
CORVALLIS – Future Beaver Jade Carey is set to begin competition at the Tokyo Olympics this weekend.
Â
Carey, part of the U.S.A. contingent, will be competing as an individual after qualifying for a spot over the last year of competition. She earned her place with impressive performances at four World Cup competitions between 2018 and 2019. Her accomplishments over that stretch were highlighted by gold-medal performances on vault and floor at both the 2019 FIG Individual Apparatus World in Baku, Azerbaijan and the 2019 FIG World Cup in Doha, Qatar.
Â
Competing alongside five other American gymnasts, Carey will open her Olympic run at 11:10 p.m. PT on Saturday as part of Subdivision 3 in the qualifying round. The top eight finishers on each apparatus, along with the 24 highest scorers in the all-around, will advance to the event finals (nations may send no more than two competitors to any single event final).
Â
The All-Around Final will be held on Thursday July 29. Event finals will take place Aug. 1-3.
Â
Carey signed a National Letter of Intent with the Beavers in the fall of 2017, and is expected to join the OSU gymnastics program in time for the 2022 season.
