Kevin Abel scattered four hits and a run in a complete-game effort but Stanford prevailed in a 1-0 game Thursday night at Sunken Diamond. Brock Jones homered for Stanford and Abel was bested by Brendan Beck, who tossed a complete game of his own. Greg Fuchs, Troy Claunch and Wade Meckler all singled for the Beavers.
Hjerpe Earns Honors
• Cooper Hjerpe, Friday night's probable starter, is the reigning National Pitcher of the Week by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA). He also earned Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week honors and was one of Collegiate Baseball's National Players of the Week.
• Hjerpe limited Arizona to two hits and a run in seven innings. He struck out a career-best 11 in the effort.
• The NCBWA recognition was the first for a Pac-12 pitcher this season.
• Hjerpe also gave the Beavers 97 all-time pitcher of the week honors in the Pac-10/12, the most in the conference.
Abel To 100
• Kevin Abel surpassed 100 strikeouts in a season for the second time in his career. He came away from Thursday's start with 106 after posting 108 as a freshman in 2018.
• He is the third pitcher at OSU to record 100 or more twice, following Jonah Nickerson (2005 and 2006) and Luke Heimlich (2017 and 2018).
• Abel is one of 13 pitchers at OSU to record 100 or more in a season at least once. Eight of those 13 have come since 2005.
Claunch To 15
• Troy Claunch singled in his final at bat Thursday night to extend his hit streak to 15 games, longest by a Beaver this season.
• Claunch is 24-for-59 (.407) during the streak.
Meckler To 10
• Wade Meckler also posted a hit in his final AB, extending his hit streak to 10 games. He is 16-for-42 (.381) during the streak.
Singles
• Thursday's game lasted just 1:53. It's the Beavers' first game under two hours since March 21, 2015 vs. Washington State (1:44).
