Beavers Drop Series Opener At UCLA In 10
April 30, 2021 | Baseball
LOS ANGELES – Ryan Ober, Justin Boyd and Matthew Gretler all posted two hits in Oregon State's 6-5 loss to UCLA in 10 innings Friday night at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
Â
The Bruins, who trailed 5-1 entering the ninth, scored four in the frame to send the game to extra innings. UCLA then won the game on a bases-loaded balk by OSU reliever Jack Washburn with one out in the 10th.
Â
The teams traded solo runs through the first four innings. Gretler put the Beavers up 1-0 on an infield single in the second. UCLA's (24-13, 11-8) Josh Hahn tied the game with an RBI single to center in the fourth.
Â
The Beavers went ahead 4-1 in the eighth thanks to a run-scoring double by Andy Armstrong, then a two-run triple by Garret Forrester. The double from Armstrong extended his hit streak to a season-long 10 games.
Â
OSU (28-13, 10-6) made it a 5-1 game in the ninth when Ober posted his second hit of the game, a double to right.
Â
The Bruins, however, battled back with the four-run ninth that tied the game on a pinch-hit three-run double by Jack Filby.
Â
Washburn took the loss to drop to 3-1 on the year. The win went to UCLA reliever Max Rajcic, who worked a scoreless 10th. He is 2-1.
Â
Neither starter figured in the decision. OSU's Kevin Abel struck out eight and allowed two hits and a run with six walks in 4 1/3 innings. His counterpart, Zach Pettway, held the Beavers to four hits and a run with two walks and a strikeout in six innings.
