Beavers Close 2021 Season in Athens
April 02, 2021 | Women's Gymnastics
ATHENS, Ga. - The Oregon State gymnastics team's season came to an end Friday afternoon at the NCAA Athens Regional.Â
Â
Oregon State, entering the regional ranked No. 24, competed in the first session with No. 8 Minnesota, No. 9 Denver, and No. 18 Georgia.Â
Â
The Beavers started strong on vault but ultimately finished fourth overall with a 196.375. Oregon State earned a 49.175 for the second-place finish on vault while the floor squad tallied a 49.400 for a third-place event finish.
Â
"I am extremely proud of this group of athletes," said head coach Tanya Chaplin. "They fought through adversity all season, and finished the year with a strong performance at the NCAA Athens Regional."
Â
Opening the meet for the Beavers, Kayla Bird started out with a 9.750 on vault. Each gymnast in the vault lineup improved upon the one before with Kristina Peterson and Kaitlyn Yanish getting a 9.775 before Sydney Gonzales scored a 9.825. The Dagen sisters closed the event as Lacy tallied a 9.850 and Madi closed the first rotation with her third 9.950 on the season.
Â
Moving on to bars, Oregon State had a little bit of trouble. Peterson opened the event with a 9.650 with M. Dagen following with a 9.750. Both Kaitlyn's - Hoiland and Yanish - tallied two straight personal records before Bird topped Oregon State's scores with her very own 9.800.Â
Â
At the halfway mark, Minnesota held the lead with a 98.850; Georgia (98.350) and Denver (98.200) were battling for second-place while the Beavers held fourth (97.900).
Â
Oregon State continued with strong routines on beam and floor but it wasn't enough to overcome the deficit from the second rotation.
Â
On the balance beam, M. Dagen once again led the Beavers with a 9.900 to finish the event. Similar to vault, the beam lineup saw each gymnast build off of one another, gaining momentum throughout. Lexie Gonzales and Ariana Young tallied a 9.750 each before Jenna Domingo added a 9.850 and Sydney Gonzales scored a 9.825.
Â
On the floor, S. Gonzales provided the much-needed start. Competing in just her second competition on the event, S. Gonzales started off with a 9.850, for a personal record, before Kayla Bird added another 9.850. Closing out the meet, the Beavers tallied three-straight 9.900's from Savanna Force, M. Dagen, and Yanish.Â
