Beavers Win Series Opener Against Utah
April 01, 2021 | Baseball
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Jake Dukart went 4-for-4 and Jacob Melton recorded three hits to pace Oregon State to a 4-3 win over Utah Thursday night at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field.
Â
Jake Mulholland closed out his seventh game of 2021 and 37th of his career – tying Kevin Gunderson for the Oregon State record – but not before the Utes made a late rally. With OSU up 4-2 in the ninth, Utah pinch hitter Shea Kramer made it a 4-3 game with a single to left.
Â
Mulholland, facing a runners on the corners situation, induced Jaylon McLaughlin into a game-ending fielder's choice to send Oregon State (19-5 overall, 6-1 Pac-12 Conference) to its sixth consecutive win.
Â
Dukart doubled in the first and singled in the third, fifth and seventh innings for his second-career four-hit effort. His single in the fifth drove in a run and helped ignite a three-run frame that gave the Beavers the lead for good.
Â
Dukart's single tied the game at two, which was followed by a Troy Claunch sacrifice fly. The Beavers' ended their scoring on a wild pitch.
Â
Melton, meanwhile, tripled in the eighth to cap a 3-for-4 day. He also singled in both the second and fourth innings.
Â
Jack Washburn started for the Beavers and worked 3 2/3 innings, allowing three hits and two runs. He was replaced by Mitchell Verburg in the fourth, who earned his first win of 2021 after limiting Utah to two hits in 2 1/3 scoreless innings.
Â
Utah (5-14, 2-5) starter Justin Kelly took the loss after allowing nine hits and four runs in five innings. He is 0-5 on the year.
