Oregon State Holds No. 22 California Scoreless for a Tie
March 28, 2021 | Women's Soccer
BERKELEY, Calif. - The Oregon State women's soccer team kept No. 22 California scoreless in a tie at the teams' 2021 rematch, Sunday afternoon.
Â
"Our student-athletes battled all day," said head coach Matt Kagan. "We are proud of the group for getting a tie on such a hot day. These Friday/Sunday weekends are difficult, especially in the Pac-12, and while we didn't win, there is a ton to build off of!"
Â
The Beavers came out attacking in the first half, holding possession for much of the 45 minutes.Â
Â
Before Oregon State had secured its first corner kick in the 12th minute, sophomore trio Brianna McReynolds, Abby Schwartz, and Sophie Conrad each followed a shot from redshirt-senior Nicole Nickerson with one of their own.Â
Â
Falling back on defense, the Golden Bears kicked their first shot, for a save from junior keeper Bridgette Skiba, shortly after the Beavers' first corner kick.
Â
In a similar fashion, California's first corner kick led to a change of possession and OSU notched two more chances at a goal with two corners.
Â
As the first half wrapped up, redshirt-junior McKenzie Weinert and Cal's Lily Arbabaraghi both launched an attempt on goal for Oregon State's fifth and California's third shot.
Â
In the second half, the Beavers had to take on more of a defensive play with the Golden Bears' consistent attack.
Â
Just over one minute into the half, the OSU defense stopped a close call with a save from Skiba and a block on the rebounded shot from redshirt-sophomore Madison Ellsworth.
Â
Oregon State continued to take its chances but the Beavers were unable to take their next shot until the 78th minute.Â
Â
The final 12 minutes of regulation saw three shots from Oregon State and two from California.
Â
The first overtime period was a lot of midfield play from both the Golden Bears and the Beavers. Cal was able to get two shots on goal but neither team was able to capitalize on the golden goal rule.
Â
Both teams saw more offensive action in the second overtime period.Â
Â
The Golden Bears came out with four shots in the first three minutes but Oregon State turned over the ball for three shots, two on goal, by Weinert in the final seven minutes of the game.
Â
Skiba, the sole Beaver goalkeeper in the contest, did not allow a ball past her with nine saves against the Bears.
Â
This game marks the second time in two seasons of play that Oregon State has tied California in a scoreless game.
Â
The Beavers will return home to face Colorado on Friday, April 2 before hosting Utah on Sunday, April 4.
