CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Oregon State women's soccer team fought hard but it was No. 14 California taking home the 3-1 win, Friday night.

Oregon State and California spent the night battling each other for possession of the ball. "Congrats to Cal," said head coach Matt Kagan. "The big difference in the game was their efficiency in the box. From a big picture perspective, I was happy with how we played today. We controlled most of the match from a territorial standpoint but we unfortunately didn't finish our chances. We need to recover and get ready for a big match on Sunday."

The cold and rainy weekend night had the Beavers and the Golden Bears trading shots. Sophomore Brianna McReynolds gave OSU its first shot of the night just over a minute into the game.

Following a crucial save by junior goalkeeper Bridgette Skiba in the 13th minute, Oregon State's junior Sydney Studer and sophomore Abby Schwartz added two shots in the 16th and 17th minutes, respectively.

After defending their goal once more the Beavers went on a successful offensive run. Bringing the ball up the field, redshirt-junior McKenzie Weinert added a shot in the 19th minute.

At 19:13, McReynolds scored the first goal of the game. Schwartz sent a pass into the penalty area and after dodging through two defenders, McReynolds sent her shot into the net from just six yards out to give Oregon State the 1-0 lead.

Just over four minutes later, California tied the score with a penalty kick goal.

Tied at the halfway mark, the Golden Bears notched a second goal less than two minutes into the second half.

For the following 30 minutes of the second half, OSU and Cal battled it out for possession. The Golden Bears made two shots with the Beavers attempting a goal three times before California secured the lead with a third, and final, goal in the 80th minute.

Oregon State fought hard outshooting California, 4-1, in the final 10 minutes but the Beavers could not find the back of the net.

OSU and Cal tied, 15-15, with shots while California led in shots on goal, 8-4, and Skiba made five saves.

McReynolds led the team with five shots while Studer followed with three. Weinert and Schwartz each made two shots.

McReynolds has scored a goal in all three games on the season.

The Beavers return to action as they host No. 3 Stanford on Sunday, Feb. 28 at 3 p.m.
