Six Beavers Ranked in First NCAA Coaches Poll
February 11, 2021 | Wrestling
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State wrestling team has six wrestlers ranked in the first NCAA coaches poll for the 2021 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships, the NCAA announced Thursday afternoon.
Â
The NCAA also released its pre-allocations for the 2021 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships, hosted in St. Louis on March 18-20. The Pac-12 Conference was awarded 19 of the 266 automatic qualifying bids.
Â
The weight class conference champion in each qualifying tournament will earn an automatic berth to the national championships. The Pac-12 hosts its qualifying tournament Feb. 28 in Corvallis, Oregon.
Â
Each conference was awarded additional pre-allocations based on the five-year average (2016-20) of pre-allocations earned by the conference in each weight class. In recent years, pre-allocations have been determined by a formula measuring Division I winning percentage, ratings percentage index and coaches' ranking. A decrease in overall matches, and in particular non-conference matches, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, led the NCAA Division I Wrestling Committee to transition to using the five-year historical average to determine pre-allocations for 2021.
Â
The coaches' rankings are determined by a vote of 14 coaches in each weight class with two head coaches from each conference. The next coaches ranking will come out in two weeks on Feb. 25.
Â
Leading the way for the Beavers is the Willits brothers, coming in at 15 in their respective weight classes with Grant at 141 and Hunter at 157. Both brothers are 7-2 on the season, while Grant is on a four match win streak and Hunter has won his last six duals.
Â
At 133, Devan Turner checks in at 22 with a 4-4 record on the year and 3-4 in duals.
Â
Brandon Kaylor is ranked 28 at 125 after posting a 5-4 dual record this season. Ryan Reyes was tabbed 29th at 184 with a 5-3 record, all his matches being decided by decision.
Â
Rounding out the Beaver wrestlers is J.J. Dixon at 31 in the 197 weight class. Dxon is 6-3 on the year and 5-0 in matches determined by a decision. He is on a four match win streak.
Â
The Beavers will return to action on Feb. 28 for the Pac-12 Championships in Corvallis, Oregon in Gill Coliseum.
