Beaver Comeback Bid Falls Just Short vs. Irish
November 27, 2021 | Women's Basketball
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – An impressive Beaver comeback came up just short, as the No. 16 Oregon State women's basketball team nearly overcame a 22-point deficit before falling to Notre Dame 64-62 in Daytona Beach, Fla.
Â
"I was super proud – this is a young team and it takes a while for teams to gel," said Oregon State head coach Scott Rueck. "There are a lot of new faces on this roster. I wish we were playing like a March team right now, but we aren't there quite yet. I know how much talent is on this roster and the character of these competitors. Every team needs to find its identity, and we are in the process of doing that."
Â
The Beavers had a chance to tie or take the lead in the closing seconds of the fourth quarter, but were unable to convert.
Â
Talia von Oelhoffen scored 23 of her 25 points in the second half to power the comeback bid. She went 4-for-5 from long range in the final two quarters. Taylor Jones put up a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds to go along with three blocks.
Â
Kennedy Brown had 14 rebounds and four blocks.
Â
Oregon State shot 53.3 percent in the third quarter and 53.8 percent in the fourth.
Â
The Beavers fell behind early, as the Fighting Irish scored the first eight points of the game. Oregon State cut the edge to two at 14-12, before Notre Dame ended the opening frame up 19-12.
Â
The Fighting Irish went to the break in front 30-18.
Â
Notre Dame headed into the closing frame in front 56-36. Oregon State scored seven-straight point to get back within 11.
Â
The Beavers continued to cut into the Irish lead, as von Oelhoffen powered the Oregon State offense down the stretch. OSU had a chance to level the score in the closing seconds, but could not convert on the opportunity, as the Irish took the win by two.
Â
The Beavers will be back in Gill on Wednesday for an 11 a.m. tip vs. Pacific, as OSU hosts its annual Beavers Beyond the Classroom game.
