Stokmans In Second Place, Beavers Tied For Fifth In Hawai’i

KAILUA-KONA, Hawai'i – Danique Stokmans fired a 4-under 69 to lead the Oregon State women's golf team in the first round of the Nanea Pac-12 Preview on Monday.
The Beavers shot a 1-over 293 at the par-73, 6,449-yard Nanea Golf Club and are tied with Colorado for fifth place in the 12-team field.
Stanford holds the lead through 18 holes with a 3-under 289, USC sits in second with a 2-under 290, and Washington and Oregon are tied for third with a 1-under 291.
The second round of the three-day, 54-hole tournament begins at 9:30 a.m. PT with a shotgun start. Live scoring is available at golfstat.com.
A redshirt freshman from Wassenaar, Netherlands, Stokmans had an eagle on the par-5, 462-yard sixth hole, four birdies -- all on the back nine -- 11 pars and only two bogeys to finish with a 4-under 69. She's in second place in the 60-player field and only one stroke behind Katherine Muzi of USC who finished with a 5-under 68.
Stokmans' best career score is a 4-under 68 in the first round of her first collegiate tournament, the Dick McGuire Invitational this past September. Her best career finish is a tie for 32nd place at the Dick McGuire Invitational.
Chayse Gomez continued her strong play with an even-par 73 that included six birdies, tied for the most in the field. She had three birdies on the par-4's, two on the par-3's and one on the par-5's, and is tied for 11th place heading into Tuesday's middle round.
All-Pac-12 senior Ellie Slama was steady as usual with three birdies, 12 pars, two bogeys and a double that has her in a tie for 21st place with a 1-over 74.
Kelsey Webster is tied for 38th place with a 4-over 77 and Madde Sund is tied for 48th with a 5-over 78. Webster dropped in two birdies and Sund finished the opening round with one.
