CORVALLIS – The Oregon State University Track and Field program mourns the loss of two-time NCAA Champion Steve DeAutremont, who has passed away.
Â
"We are deeply saddened by the passing of Steve DeAutremont," said Oregon State head coach Louie Quintana. "Not only was he a champion thrower during a prolific time for track and field at Oregon State, but he has been an avid and most generous supporter of our current track and field program. Steve will always be a champion to us and will be greatly missed."
Â
DeAutremont won NCAA titles in the hammer throw in 1969 and 1970 with throws of 190-5 and 203-9, respectively. His championships were preceded by a seventh place showing in the 1968 NCAA's.
DeAutremont held the school record in the hammer for 17 years with a career best of 207-2 set in 1970. He concentrated on the hammer for most of his career after also competing in the discus and shot in his sophomore and freshman seasons.
Â
Following his Oregon State career, DeAutromont was a four-time member of the USA Track and Field Team, and quailfied for the 1976 Olympic Games, but was unable to compete due to illness. He also was a part-time throwing coach at OSU and helped develop All-Americans Butch Schmidt and Tim Fox.
Â
A constant supporter of the Oregon State program, Steve established the DeAutremont Family Track and Field Endowment Fund, and was a member of the Terry Baker Society.
