Beaver Football Classics Features 2006 Win over No. 3 USC
May 06, 2020 | Football
CORVALLIS – Oregon State University Athletics, in conjunction with Beaver Sports Properties, is excited to announce the fourth installment of the "Beaver Football Classics (BFC)." BFC is the rebroadcast of the Beaver Sports Radio Network coverage, brought to you by Your Local Toyota Dealers, of some of the top Oregon State football games.
This week's BFC is from October 28, 2006, when Oregon State took down No. 3 USC 33-31, ending the Trojans' conference-record 27-game league win streak.
The rebroadcast begins Wednesday on the Beaver Sports Podcast page on OSUBeavers.com under the Fan Zone tab. The game will also air on TuneIn, SiriusXM, and via many of the Beaver Sports Radio Network stations (check station schedules for exact time), including 1240 KEJO in Corvallis Saturday at Noon.
GAME DETAILS
OSU – OSU rebounded from a rocky 2-3 start to the season which included home losses to Washington State and California. The Beavers did enter the game with No. 2/3 USC on a two-game win streak with back-to-back road victories at Washington and Arizona.
THE STREAKS: USC hadn't lost a league game since September of 2003, a three-overtime defeat to California. The Trojans had an 18-game road winning streak and an 18-game October winning streak.
LONG SEASON: The 2006 season is the longest in OSU history with the Beavers playing 14 games, including a regular season-ending victory at Hawai'i and a 39-38 win over Missouri to cap the year, in what many consider the best Sun Bowl ever played. The Beavers were 2-3 after game five but lost only once the rest of the way – at UCLA – to finish the remarkable season 10-4. The 10-win campaign still ranks as the second-most victories in a season for the program, trailing only the 11-1 Fiesta Bowl team.
USC – The Pete Carroll-led Trojans entered the contest on a six-game winning streak that included victories over Nebraska, Arkansas, Washington, Washington State, Arizona, and Arizona State. The 33 points allowed to OSU was the most USC would give up for the season; The Trojans would give up only 19 points combined over the following two games that included victories over No. 21 Oregon and No. 17 California. USC ended the regular season falling, in an upset to UCLA at the Rose Bowl, before returning to the Pasadena landmark New Year's Day of 2007 and defeating Michigan for an 11-2 season.
PAC-10 PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Beaver punt returner/wide receiver Sammie Stroughter earned Pac-10 Special Teams Player of the Week. Stroughter scored on a 70-yard punt return midway through the third quarter to build the Beavers' lead to 30-10. He also had 127 yards receiving.
33-10: The Beavers built their biggest lead of the game, at 33-10, when Alexis Serna booted a 20-yard field goal with 4:51 remaining in the third quarter.
CLINTON POLK: Junior running back Clinton Polk made his only start of his two-year Beaver career, subbing for the injured Yvenson Bernard. The Phoenix native made it count for a memorable 100 yards rushing on 27 carries.
JEFF VAN ORSOW: Defensive lineman Jeff Van Orsow made one of the key plays to the game with seven seconds remaining. USC had furiously rallied with 21 consecutive points and lined up for the game-tying two-point conversation. Van Orsow tipped John David Booty's two-point conversion pass near the line of scrimmage and the Beavers recovered the ensuing onside kick to preserve the victory.
BIGGEST SINCE 1967: OSU hadn't beaten a team No. 3 or higher since defeating then No. 1 USC in 1967. That statistical note would last less than two years as OSU derailed the then No. 1 Trojans in 2008 at Reser Stadium.
BOXSCORE
Season ticket prices for the 2020 season remain the same as for 2019, with an additional game and the 124th Civil War. For information on season tickets please call 541-737-2050 or online at osubeavers.com.
