Fiesta Bowl Beaver Football Classic Debuts Friday
April 09, 2020 | Football
CORVALLIS – Oregon State University Athletics, in conjunction with Beaver Sports Properties, is excited to announce the second installment of the "Beaver Football Classics (BFC)." BFC is the rebroadcast of the Beaver Sports Radio Network coverage, brought to you by Your Local Toyota Dealers, of some of the top Oregon State football games.
This week's BFC is from January 1, 2001, when OSU rolled into the Phoenix, Ariz., area bringing Beaver Nation in force to the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl. The then-No. 5 Beavers blasted the No. 10 Notre Dame Fighting Irish 41-9 with a 29-point third quarter. The outcome prompted then-Irish Head Coach Bob Davie to proclaim – "We got our butt kicked. We got outcoached, we got outplayed."
The rebroadcast begins Friday, April 10 at 3 p.m. and is available on the Beaver Sports Podcast page on OSUBeavers.com under the Fan Zone tab. The game will also air on TuneIn, SiriusXM, and via many of the Beaver Sports Radio Network stations (check station schedules for exact time), including 1240 KEJO in Corvallis Saturday at Noon.
GAME DETAILS
OSU -- Oregon State entered the Fiesta Bowl on a six-game winning streak, a 10-1 record, and a No. 5 national ranking. The Beavers' lone loss was 33-30 at then-No. 13 Washington. Dennis Erickson was in his second year at the helm of the Beavers and had recently been named the Pac-10 Coach of the Year – he would go on to become the only coach in league history to be named the Conference's Coach of the Year at three different schools (WSU, ASU). Current Beaver Head Coach Jonathan Smith was named the offensive MVP of the game after passing for 305 yards and three touchdowns, and linebacker Darnell Robinson was the defensive MVP after making seven tackles, including a sack and two tackles-for-loss, and forcing a fumble.

NOTRE DAME – The Irish entered the contest with a seven-game win streak and a 9-2 overall record. The losses were both in September, to No. 1 Nebraska at home in overtime and at No. 23 Michigan State. The Irish defeated No. 25 Texas A&M and No. 13 Purdue during the season that featured playing four ranked teams, all during the first four weeks of the year. Notre Dame also had victories over Pac-10 teams USC and Stanford, as well as West Virginia, Navy, Air Force, Boston College, and Rutgers.
GAME BOXSCORE
11-1: Oregon State finished the year with its best record in school history. The Beavers defeated four nationally ranked teams at the time of the game – No. 8 USC (31-21 – the opossum game), No. 23 UCLA (44-38), No. 5 Oregon (23-13), and Notre Dame. OSU finished the year No. 4 in the Associated Press and Coaches Polls – Oklahoma was No. 1, Miami No. 2, and Washington No. 3.
