Beaver Football Classics Features Overtime Thriller at Utah
April 29, 2020 | Football
CORVALLIS – Oregon State University Athletics, in conjunction with Beaver Sports Properties, is excited to announce the third installment of the "Beaver Football Classics (BFC)." BFC is the rebroadcast of the Beaver Sports Radio Network coverage, brought to you by Your Local Toyota Dealers, of some of the top Oregon State football games.
This week's BFC is from Sept. 14, 2013 in Salt Lake City in a thrilling overtime game with the Utes at Rice-Eccles Stadium. Fox Sports was on site for the national broadcast that featured the Beavers, alluding the Network's Sky Cam on a trick play, pull out a 51-48 victory.
The rebroadcast begins Wednesday on the Beaver Sports Podcast page on OSUBeavers.com under the Fan Zone tab. The game will also air on TuneIn, SiriusXM, and via many of the Beaver Sports Radio Network stations (check station schedules for exact time), including 1240 KEJO in Corvallis Saturday at Noon.
GAME DETAILS
OSU – The Beavers entered the year No. 25, but suffered a one-point season-opening loss to Eastern Washington before rebounding for a 33-14 home victory over Hawai'i. The game at Utah was the first of back-to-back road contests and a stretch of playing four of five on the road; all Beaver victories over Utah, San Diego State, Washington State, and California.
Utah – The Utes won their first two games over Utah State and Weber State, and would complete the near season sweep of the in-state programs (did not play Southern Utah) with a victory at BYU the following week.
Sky Cam – Fox Sports had installed its Sky Cam before the game to provide a birds-eye view of the game from above the action. Sky Cam nearly proved to be a formidable defender for the Utes. The Beavers faced 4th-and-1 on its 45-yard line early in the fourth quarter. Following a timeout, then head coach Mike Riley decided to gamble clinging to a 34-31 lead. A trick play with quarterback Sean Mannion pitching the ball to running back Terron Ward, who then threw back across the field to Mannion.Mannion then passed to receiver Brandin Cooks for 48 yards (one of two fourth-down conversions for OSU in the 4th qtr). Mannion had to make his pass while the Sky Cam hovered dangerously close, faked out by the Beavers' deception, in the target area. The gamble led to an important field goal.
PAC-12 PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Neither Sean Mannion or Cooks earned the league's Player of the Week honors, but cornerback Steven "Ballhawk" Nelson did. Nelson picked off two passes in the second half to earn the honor.
27-10: The Beavers built their biggest lead of the night, at 27-10, less than a minute into the fourth quarter thanks to defensive back's Sean Martin's 27-yard interception return for a touchdown of the Utes' Travis Wilson pass.
1968: The Beavers snapped a three-game losing streak in Salt Lake City. OSU had last won in Salt Lake City in 1968 in a game that featured the late and College Football Hall of Fame member Bill Enyart rushed for what is still a school record with 299 yards.
A LONG NIGHT – The game kicked off at 8:05 p.m. MDT, ending at 11:56 p.m. MDT. The Beavers landed in Eugene following the game when the sun was on the horizon. The game was further delayed by a scary concussion injury to OSU running back Storm Woods.
RECORD NIGHTS
443: Sean Mannion burned the Utah defense for a then career-high with 443 yards and tied the then-OSU mark with five touchdowns passing – he would break the record with six touchdown passes two weeks later against Colorado. Mannion's effort against Utah made him the first Beaver quarterback since Derek Anderson in 2004 to put back-to-back-to-back games together of 350-plus yards passing.
210: Brandin Cooks had a then career-high 210 yards receiving – he would get 232 a few weeks later at California. Cooks made the game-winning overtime catch of six yards after a Utah defensive back misplayed a Mannion pass.
Boxscore
Bowling – Oregon State eventually would play in the Hawai'i Bowl to end the 2013 season. The Beavers defeated Boise State 38-23 at Aloha Stadium.
Season ticket prices for the 2020 season remain the same as for 2019, with an additional game and the 124th Civil War. For information on season tickets please call 541-737-2050 or online at osubeavers.com.
