Dhesi Clinches Olympic Berth for Team Canada

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Former Oregon State heavyweight Amar Dhesi clinched an Olympic berth for Team Canada following a semifinal victory at the Pan-American Olympic Qualifier on Sunday.

Dhesi pinned his opponent, Charles Merrilll, of Puerto Rico to secure a victory in the 125 kg semifinal. The Surrey, B.C., native won his two round robin matches by technical superiority.

Dhesi was a heavyweight standout in Corvallis, where he was a three-time All-American (2016, 2018, 2019), a two-time Pac-12 Most Outstanding Wrestler (2016, 2018) and 2018 Oregon State Male Athlete of the Year.

In December, Dhesi won the top heavyweight spot at the Canadian Wrestling Trials by defeating 2016 Olympian Korey Jarvis in Niagara Falls, Ontario. The result advanced him to this week's Pan-Am Qualification Tournament where he earned a top-two finish to secure his roster spot.

The 2020 Summer Olympics are scheduled for Tokyo from July 24 to Aug. 9.
