Beavers Fall at No. 6 Arizona State

TEMPE, Ariz. – The Oregon State Wrestling team fell to No. 6 Arizona State, 26-12, behind a physical effort in Tempe. Ariz., on Friday night.
The Beavers notched four victories with three consecutive wins coming at 133, 141 and 149 pounds. No. 15 Devan Turner (133) improved to 18-7 on the year with a 5-4 decision in a tightly contested match over No. 17 Josh Kramer while Lane Stigall (149) also earned a ranked victory over No. 21 Josh Maruca.
The match started at 125 pounds, in which Brandon Kaylor fell to ASU's Brandon Courtney by a 14-8 decision. Kaylor came alive in the third period with two takedowns but the Sun Devils struck first and led 3-0 after one bout.
At 133 pounds, redshirt junior Devan Turner improved to 18-7 on the season with a tight victory – earning a 5-4 decision over No. 17 Josh Kramer for Oregon State's first points. A clutch victory came via a takedown and two-point nearfall in the final thirty seconds of the match which improved Turner to 6-0 in dual meets.
Grant Willits battled at 141 pounds against Navonte Demison and came away with an 8-2 decision for his 14th win of the year. Willits' physical style translated to three takedowns, a lone escape and a bonus stalling point to put OSU up 6-3 in team points.
Lane Stigall earned an upset victory at 149 pounds by defeating No. 21 Josh Maruca in another physical bout which notched the third consecutive victory for the Beavers, leading 9-3. A quick start in the first period put Stigall up 4-2 before adding a late escape to seal up a 5-3 decision.
Michael Murphy was pinned by No. 22 Jacori Teemer (0:43) which suddenly evened the score to 9-9 apiece heading into the intermission. The Sun Devils would surge ahead at 165 pounds after collecting another pin as Aaron Olmos fell to No. 6 Josh Shields (3:46) to lead 15-9.
Jackson McKinney dropped a tough bout by technical fall, 20-4, to Anthony Valencia at 174 pounds while Colt Doyle notched an impressive victory in the next match.
Doyle improved to 4-1 in dual meets with a 9-3 decision over ASU's Austin Clayton. No. 32 Doyle earned over two minutes of riding time and capitalized on another physical matchup against the No. 6 Sun Devils.
Kordell Norfleet nabbed a 9-6 decision over J.J. Dixon despite Dixon collecting a four-point nearfall with under a minute remaining in the 197-pound bout. Jamarcus Grant closed out the dual by dropping a 9-2 decision to Tanner Hall at 285 pounds.
