Beavers capture Viking Rust Buster title

Eight beavers finished in the top-ten to win the event for the second consecutive year.
PORTLAND, Ore. - The Oregon State cross country team opened up the 2019 season on a good note by capturing the second annual Viking Rust Buster title hosted by Portland State. The Beavers finished the race six strong with sophomore Haley Wolf securing the individual title followed by redshirt junior Lexi Reed. This marks the second consecutive year the Beavs have won the meet title while also having a Beaver finish in first with Lexi Reed winning last year.

A deep and talented roster was showcased locally as eight out of the sixteen Beavers participating finished in the top-ten. The women navigated the course with collective poise as Wolf paced the team from the start, needing a time of only 13:32.3 to finish the 4K course at Blue Lake Park. Reed followed just after Wolf for a second-place finish at 13:39.2.

Freshman Gabby Peterson made an impressive debut in the orange and black as she finished third with a time of 13:45.2. Peterson was one of five freshman to make their collegiate debut and also one of four newcomers inside the top-ten. Junior Audrey Lookner followed Peterson as she finished fourth with a time of 13:48.3, respectively.

Also making an impressive collegiate start was freshman Meagen Lowe who finished fifth with a time of 14:03.6. Redshirt sophomore Grace Fetherstonhaugh ended with a time of 14:11.1 to capture sixth while freshman Libby Rinck and Liv Downing finished ninth and tenth to round out the top-ten scoring. Rinck finished with a time of 14:22.1 with Downing coming in at 14:22.6.

Following Downing were junior Rebecca Ledsham (14:22.9) and senior Alyssa Foote (14:25.6) who finished eleventh and thirteenth, respectively. Freshman Emily Perez (14:38.9) and junior transfer Kate Intile (14:46.2) closed out the top-20, finishing 17th and 20th.

Graduate transfer Erin Dietz finished 27th (14:57.1) with redshirt junior Maddie Fuhrman locking in a spot in 28th place (14:57.7). Freshman Annika Sundstrom rounded out the scoring for the Beavers finishing in 47th place (15:43.9).

The Beavers claimed the meet title with a score of 15 points with Portland State following second with 66 points. Portland finished third at 69 points with UNLV at 104 points. Pacific (Ore.) closed out the top-five scoring at 143 points.

Up Next:
The Beavers return to action in two weeks when they travel to Monmouth, Oregon for the Sundowner Invitational on Friday, September 20th. The meet will give the team a preview of the PAC-12 Championship course (Ash Creek Preserve) which will be hosted by Oregon State on Friday, November 1st.
