Get To Know Shemar Smith
September 26, 2019 | Football
What aside from football do you enjoy most about Oregon State?
Shemar Smith: "I like the community. Corvallis is tight and everyone knows everyone. It's not a far distance for friendships or relationships so you can go around the corner and see different football players or people you know."
What is your favorite subject at Oregon State so far?
SS: "Sociology."Â
How would you describe Coach Smith and Coach Bray's coaching style?Â
SS: "Coach Smith and Coach Bray are like two different people. Coach Smith is more laid back and calm while Coach Bray is more energetic and aggressive. He brings energy every day in practice."
Does your number mean anything to you?
SS: "There's no special meaning to it. I could have changed it but I stuck with it."
What would you be doing if you didn't play football?
SS: "I would be a police officer."Â
What was your first impression of Oregon State and Corvallis?
SS: "When I first got here, it was really foggy (laughing). That seems forever ago. But I just like how everyone on the team was so close. You could tell that from day one - even on my visit."
What teammates do you hang out with away from the field the most?
SS: "I'd say Kee Whetzel, Jaydon Grant and Omar Hicks-Onu."
What are your impressions on the new uniforms?
SS: "They're sick. I love them. Especially the all orange ones. I can't wait to make plays in those things."
If you could meet at historical figure dead or alive, who would it be and why?
SS: "Martin Luther King Jr. It speaks for itself."Â
Do you have any pregame superstitions?
SS: "Not really. Every game has a different vibe to it. I just go into games with the mentality to make plays and that's it. I listen to music like J. Cole, too."
What life lessons has football taught you?
SS: "I'd say teamwork and most definitely communication. That's one thing I can say football has taught me for sure."
What doors has football opened for you that you never thought would be possible?
SS: "We have this program called Beyond Football which opens doors for you in case football doesn't work. It reaches out to other organizations and occupations to help you succeed."
What does an Oregon State education mean to you?
SS: "Getting a degree just means a lot, period. I'm just happy to get my degree."
