Beavers Fall in Five to Northern Colorado
September 19, 2019 | Women's Volleyball
GREELEY, Colo. – The Oregon State volleyball team dropped a five-set match, its first of the UNC/CSU Classic, Thursday night at Northern Colorado.
The Beavers (6-3), who continue to play short-handed due to injury and illness, led 2-1 before falling to the Bears (6-5). Set scores were 25-23, 23-25, 25-16, 18-25, 5-15.
Oregon State got out to a solid start in the opening set going up 12-6 as the Beavers posted three early blocks. OSU continued to push the action and still led at 23-17 before UNC wrestled the momentum away storming back to tie the score at 23-23. Following an OSU timeout, senior Kory Cheshire recorded a kill and Lindsey Schell and Haylie Bennett combined on a block to hold off the Bears, 25-23. Cheshire led the Beavers with four kills in the first while Bennett added three.
Despite dropping the opening set, UNC regained the momentum in c second opening a four-point lead at 13-9. The Beavers rattled off three in a row on a Cheshire kill, another Bennett/Schell block and an ace by Maddie Sheehan but they couldn't gain the lead. Trailing 20-17, the Beavs made another push on a pair of Maddie Goings kills and one by Shekinah Clarke to even the score at 20-20. But again, OSU couldn't pull ahead and the Bears held off the Beavers off to even the match at a set apiece, 25-23.
The Beavers came out of the break looking like a different team taking control early at 7-3. The teams traded points for a bit and OSU led 17-14 leading to a 8-2 burst to take the set 25-16. Goings posted three kills during the flurry while Clarke, Cheshire and Makenna Browne each scored as well.
OSU wasn't able to continue the momentum into the fourth set as UNC seemed to hit reset. The fourth stanza was close with the Bears leading 10-8, however UNC began to pull away opening its lead to 20-13. Oregon State corrected course with Bennett recording a couple kills late, but the Bears took the fourth set, 25-18, to force a fifth set.
UNC opened the final set with a 5-1 run and the Beavers were unable to recover. The Bears held on to win the set, 15-5, and steal the match.
Game Notes: Maddie Goings returned to the court in the second set after missing last weekend's Redhawk Invitational … Goings led the Beavers with 13 kills … Makenna Browne registered a career-high 14 digs … Haylie Bennett led OSU with 15.0 points (11 kills, 1 solo block, 6 block assists).
Next Up: Oregon State heads down the road to Fort Collins to take on No. 22 Colorado State at 6 p.m. PT for the Beavers' second match of the UNC/CSU Classic.
