Beavers Fall to Rams, 3-1

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Oregon State volleyball team was bested, 3-1, by No. 22 Colorado State in the Beavers' second match of the UNC/CSU Classic Friday night.
With the loss, the Beavers fall to 6-4, while the Rams improved to 10-1. Set scores were 16-25, 17-25, 26-24 and 22-25.
Maddie Goings registered a team-leading 11 kills. Haylie Bennett was efficient with 10 kills on 25 attempts and Lindsey Schell came off the bench to provide a spark on offense with seven kills. Grace Massey led a frantic back row defense with 20 digs while Kory Cheshire recorded a team-high six blocks.
Colorado State jumped to an early lead in the first set at 8-2 and with the exception of one quick three point spurt by the Beavers never looked back. The Rams, who entered the match with the toughest attack percentage defense in the country, held the Beavers in check taking the opening set 25-16.
It was more of the same in the second set as the Rams sped out to a 9-5 lead. OSU fought back with a 6-2 run to close the gap to 15-14. But a 6-0 CSU run put the Rams back out front and they pressed on to take it 25-17, and gaining a two sets to none lead.
The Beavers regained their feet and using a 4-0 run that included back-to-back blocks by Kory Cheshire to take a 9-7 lead in the third set. The teams swapped points with 20 ties and eight lead changes during the period and the Beavers never led by more than two but a kill by Shekinah Clarke gave the Beavers a set point opportunity at 25-24 and Goings and Cheshire combined for a block to give OSU the set, 26-24.
Oregon State refused to go away in the fourth staying close throughout the set. The Beavers closed the gap to a one point on eight occasions but could never grab the lead as the Rams held on to secure the set, 25-22, and the match.
