Beavers Cruise To Team Title At Cougar Cup
September 17, 2019 | Women's Golf
PULLMAN, Wash. – It was a great start to the season for the Oregon State women's golf team.
The Beavers won the team title at the Cougar Cup, Nicole Schroeder tied the single-round school record and three golfers finished in the top 10.
Oregon State concluded the two-day, 54-hole tournament with a 20-under 278-285-281--844 at the par-72, 6,277-yard Palouse Ridge Golf Course to cruise through the 15-team field in dominating fashion.
The Beavers finished ahead of five Pac-12 teams, including eight strokes better than second-place Oregon (12-under 852).
"This tournament was a 100 percent team effort," Oregon State head coach Dawn Shockley said. "To start the year out with a team win and three players finishing in the top 10 is very impressive. This team worked hard over the summer and it showed in Pullman against a solid field of teams. They showed a maturity level on the course that they belong with the best teams in the country.
"This was hands down the most fun Kelly (Kerkvliet) and I have had coaching a tournament."
Oregon State's 20-under 844 is the second-lowest three-round score in program history. The Beavers never finished a three-round tournament under par in their first 41 years and have now done it six times the last three seasons.

Junior Ellie Slama finished in second place with an 8-under 68-70-70--208. She now has five top-5 finishes and 10 top-10 finishes in her two-plus years at Oregon State. The All-Pac-12 golfer finished under par all three rounds in Pullman to make it 31 career sub-par rounds.
"It was a solid three rounds of golf for everyone," Slama said. "It's amazing to see each teammate contribute so much this tournament. I'm so excited for the rest of the season to see what we can accomplish together."
Senior Nicole Schroeder fired a 6-under 66 in the final round to equal the school record and move 20 spots up the leaderboard into a tie for eighth place with a 4-under 72-74-66--212.
It's the sixth time an Oregon State golfer has shot a 6-under round and Schroeder had recorded three of them (Pac-12 Preview, Fall 2018; NCAA Regionals, Spring 2018; Cougar Cup, Fall 2019). Ellie Slama (Pac-12 Preview, Fall 2018; NCAA Regionals, Spring 2019) has done it twice and Olivia Benzin was the first to do it (Ron Moore Invitational, Fall 2017).
"It's very cool to be a part of a group that truly feels like a family," Schroeder said. "Even with only 15 days together, it's obvious that we can accomplish great things this year. I'm so excited to finish out my Oregon State career with this special team."
Two true freshmen -- Chayse Gomez and Issy Taylor -- made their collegiate debuts and played superb golf. Taylor finished in a tie for eighth place with a 4-under 68-70-74--212 and Gomez finished in a tie for 13th place with a 2-under 72-71-71--214.
Senior Mari Nishiura finished in a tie for 42nd place with a 6-over 70-77-75--222.
