Get to Know Abby Schwartz
September 13, 2019 | Women's Soccer
Part 1 of our series getting to know this year's freshman class begins with Abby Schwartz. She is a freshman from Port Moody, B.C. and has recorded three goals and one assist so far this season.
What is your favorite thing about playing at Oregon State?
My favorite things is the team I get to play with. All the girls are so dedicated into marking this year the best year yet. I love the energy and the tenacity every single girl brings each day. It makes me really excited for these next four years.
How would you describe what it's like to play for Coach Kagan, Coach Ruiz-Williams and Coach Stirrett?
These coaches keep you accountable and on your toes. They push you to be the best version of yourself every day. They want nothing more than for you to succeed as a soccer player and as a person. They genuinely care about you in every aspect. I'm grateful I get to spend the next four years here under their leadership.
Does your number mean anything to you? If so, what does it mean?
The number I've chosen is the number of one of the best Canadian Women's National Team players, Christine Sinclair. I hope one day to be a member of that team, so I wear number 12 as a reminder to myself of my long-term dream.
If you weren't playing soccer what would you be doing?
While I've always played soccer, I also played field hockey and was a figure skater for a large portion of my life. If I weren't playing soccer I highly imagine I would have continued on of those two sports.
Which of your teammates do you think is the funniest? Why?
I find Paula Leblic to be one of the funniest on the team. Her jokes are usually scuttle but very hilarious. Her laugh is absolutely contagious as well. Whenever I hear her laugh I can't help but join in.
If you could meet one soccer player who would it be and why?
Lionel Messi has always been someone I've wanted to meet. His incredible ability to maneuver through plays always astonishes me. He doesn't shy away from any challenge but rather embraces it.
Who has had the biggest influence on your soccer career?
My parents have always had the most influence over my soccer career. My dad especially because he was my first coach. He's always been toughest on me, and he is the reason I am the player I am today. No matter what team I've played for or who has been my coach, my dad and mom's opinion will always mean the most to me.
If you could play in any band, or take over for any singer, who would that be and why?
Shakira would be the singer I'd take over for because I like the energy and vibes her music gives out. She's fun and an enthusiastic singer.
What do you like most about playing soccer?
My favorite part of soccer and playing the sport is all the people I've gotten to meet in the process. Winning and scoring is fun, of course, but the people you play with are the ones that make the sport and experience fun. I know I've met some of my best friends through playing soccer.
If you could have dinner with any person, dead or alive, who would it be and why?
I would have dinner with either of my grandfathers. Both of them passed away when I was very young. I would love to tell them everything I've done with my life and show them all I've accomplished. I've always wanted to meet them.
When you aren't playing soccer, what do you do to relax?
At home when I'm not playing soccer, I worked at a bakery. It was my favorite way to relax. The job, while being demanding, was so much fun and a great way to do something completely opposite from soccer. Since I've left my job, I do enjoy relaxing either by myself or with friends watching a show.
Oregon State is back in action on Sunday against Rice at 5 p.m. in Houston, Texas. The Beavers are back home next Thursday, Sept. 19 to host Idaho in the final nonconference game of the regular season.
