Beavers open regular season on Aug. 24
CORVALLIS – The Oregon State women's soccer team opened practice for the 2019 season on Wednesday, as the Beavers returned to the field for their first training session of the year. With a new coaching staff and a mixture of new players and experienced returners, OSU was excited to get back on the field.
"It was a good day," said head coach Matt Kagan. "Players are getting to know each other and the coaching staff is getting to know the players. We split them up into defenders and attackers that allowed us to get a good mix of stuff done. I was really impressed, especially with some of the younger players."
The Beavers enter the season with eight upperclassmen, including seven seniors. Redshirt senior Toni Malone has seen action in 61 games over the course of her collegiate career.
"It was a good first practice," said Malone. "I think we are all excited to be out here. Everyone looks sharp and focused on the upcoming season. I'm excited for the next training session to see what else people have to bring."
Malone is joined by redshirt sophomore McKenzie Weinert. Weinert saw action in 16 games last season making 12 starts as a forward. Weinert led the Beavers in goals in 2018, and will look to continue her strong form this season.
In goal, Oregon State brings back sophomore Bridgette Skiba who clocked 1152 minutes last season and 78 saves.
The Beavers will continue practice over the coming weeks as they prepare for their exhibition vs. UBC on Aug. 18. Oregon State will open the 2019 campaign on Aug. 24 when it travels to Portland State before hosting Villanova on Aug. 30 at Lorenz Field.
