Weinert Scores Two as Beavers Take Down Villanova in Double Overtime
August 30, 2019 | Women's Soccer
Weinert scores both goals for the Beavers in a 2-1 victory over the Wildcats.
CORVALLIS – Redshirt sophomore McKenzie Weinert scores the golden goal in Oregon State's 2-1 double-overtime victory in the 100th minute of action over Villanova to push the Beavers to a 2-0 start on the season. This is the best start in program history since the Beavers started 3-0 in 2015.
"I am super proud of the athletes," said head coach Matt Kagan. "To go down a goal to a very good Villanova team that is so well coach and so organized on the field, yet find the will to dig deep and bounce back with a win is amazing."
Weinert received a perfect pass from redshirt senior Toni Malone that she was able to take one dribble before firing it into the lower-right corner.
"It was awesome to score the game-winning goal because it was a true team effort," said Weinert. "We did this every day in practice, so it was second-nature the moment it hit my foot. Honestly though, none of it would be possible without my teammates and everyone on the field."
Villanova struck first in the 31st minute of play after a pass from deep in the corner slid through the Beaver's defense to the middle of the box. Despite multiple strong shot attempts by OSU, the Wildcats maintained that lead for the remainder of the first half.
"The players said at halftime that they got outworked in the first half," continued Kagan. "They turned to each other and said each one of them has to pick it up, and they did. We didn't give Villanova that many looks in the second half, and we did our part to create enough chances to win the game, and in the end, we scored two goals. We got a lot of production from a multiple players contributing, and that's all you can ask for."
Oregon State took six shots in the second half before Weinert was able to score the first OSU goal of the match. Weinert scored in the 85th minute of play of a powerful pass through traffic from freshman Marley Salveter to force the first overtime.
Ashleigh Fonsen got off the only shot for the Beavers in the first overtime period. OSU and Villanova remained tied after the first overtime. Weinert wasted little time in the second overtime period before capping off OSU's win.
Oregon State's defense finished with another strong outing limiting Villanova to only nine shots in 100 minutes of play while the OSU offense recorded 19 shots from nine different players.
Oregon State is back in action on Sunday against Saint Mary's at 2:30 p.m. on the Pac-12 Networks.
