Berg is one of 15 Olympians chosen as a finalist
CORVALLIS – The U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee announced that Beaver softball head coach Laura Berg is a finalist for the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Hall of Fame class of 2019. Voting begins today and runs through Sept. 3 to determine the first class inducted into the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Hall of Fame since 2012.
Berg is considered to be one of the greatest outfielders to ever play the game and is the only four-time Olympian in USA Softball history. She is one of four softball athletes to earn three Olympic Gold Medals, earning her first at the 1996 Olympics held in Atlanta, Ga. after she played in nine games for the U.S. and hit .273 with two runs scored. She earned her second in 2000 after she started in all 10 games for the U.S. and hit .158 with two runs scored. Berg won her third in 2004 after she started in eight games and hit .368 with seven hits and four runs. In 2008, Berg helped the U.S. capture the silver medal after she hit .500 with one RBI and two runs scored.
As the starting centerfielder for Team USA, Berg held a perfect fielding percentage throughout the four Olympic Games and compiled an Olympic career-batting average of .325.
Berg has also played and earned Gold Medals in four World Baseball Softball Confederation World Championships and three Pan American Championships.
Berg joined the Women's National Team coaching staff in 2012 and has helped lead the Red, White and Blue to two WBSC World Championship Silver Medals and one Gold Medal, along with a Silver Medal at the Toronto 2015 Pan American Games and most recently a Gold Medal at the Lima 2019 Pan American Games.
If selected, Berg would join former OSU high jumper Dick Fosbury, Lisa Fernandez and the 2004 U.S. Olympic Team in the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Hall of Fame.
The public is encouraged to vote as Berg is one of 15 finalists in the Olympians category that will be narrowed down to five at the conclusion of the voting period on Sept. 3. In addition to the public vote, U.S. Olympians & Paralympians and the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic family also vote on the inductees.
The class of 2019 will be announced on Monday, Sept. 23, and inducted on Friday, Nov. 1.
