August 10, 2019 | Women's Volleyball
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The 2019 season is underway as of Saturday morning as the Oregon State volleyball team took the Gill Coliseum court for its first practice of the year.
The 2019 squad returns 11 letterwinners, including five starters, from last season. Senior outside hitter Amy Underdown, who led the team in kills in 2018, along with juniors Maddie Goings and Haylie Bennett are back along with sophomore setter Maddie Sheehan. Sophomore middle blocker Lindsey Schell is back as the pivor of the front row defense, while junior libero Grace Massey is set to anchor the back row. In addition, two-year starting middle blocker Kory Cheshire returns for a sixth-year after missing the 2018 season due to injury.
While there are returners at every position, the Beavers also return depth in a quartet of seasoned seniors Makenna Browne, a defensive specialist, Serena Bruin, a middle blocker, Shekinah Clarke, an outside hitter, and Montanna Gubrud, at setter.
Added to the competition for playing time is five newcomers including sophomore transfer Chloe Brown, a full-time starter as a freshman outside hitter at Miami in 2018 who arrived at OSU in time for the spring season. Freshmen Mary Kate Lopez (setter), Cecilee Max-Brown (outside hitter), Taylor Quinn (defensive specialist) and Amya Small (middle blocker).
Fourth-year head coach Mark Barnard will work to get his squad to rebound from an injury-marred 2018 season. The Beavers will seek a second postseason berth in the last three years.
The Beavers host their annual Orange & Black Scrimmage Friday, Aug. 23 at 6 p.m. at Gill Coliseum. Admission to the event is free.
OSU's official home opener is slated for Thursday, Sept. 26 when the Beavers host the season's first Civil War against Oregon.
