May 09, 2019 | Wrestling
CORVALLIS – After a long recruiting and signing period the Oregon State wrestling staff has announced eight student-athletes who will come to the best college town in the Pac-12 for the 2019-20 season.
Of the new additions, six hail from the state of Oregon, two are from California and one comes from the East Coast in New Jersey.
Brian Barnes, originally from McMinnville High School, transfers to Oregon State from the Big 12's Northern Colorado. Barnes finished his redshirt season for the Bears 6-4 overall with three total falls. During his high school career, Barnes won three Oregon state championships which is the most in McMinnville school history.
Ein Carlos joins the Beavers from North Salem High School. Carlos has dominated the state in his last two seasons failing to drop a match over the past two years. He won three Oregon state championships during his time at North Salem HS.
OSU inked just one wrestler who doesn't hail from the west coast in Robbie Garcia. Wrestling out of Pope John High School in Hamburg, N.J., Garcia comes to Corvallis as a New Jersey state champion, and a two-time state placer winner.
The Beavers are getting another dominate in-state recruit, Gaven Jolley. Hailing from Sherwood, Ore., Jolley finished his prep career at Sherwood High School as a four-time state placer. Three times he managed to take home the top-spot in his weight class at the state tournament.
Nicholas Maximov is set to join OSU after he spent the past two seasons at Clackamas C.C. Maximov hails from Chico, Calif. and transferred to CCC from Menlo College. In 2018, Maximov earned All-American status as he placed 3rd at the NJCAA Championships.
Salem's Daniel McClung joins the Beavers from Sprague High School. McClung has had a successful prep career that saw him earn four state placings at the Oregon state tournament.
Abner Romero transfers to OSU from Fresno City College. Romero began his career as a starter at Old Dominion and entered the collegiate world as the No. 14-ranked recruit at 160 pounds out of Buchannan High School. He was the state runner-up in 2016 at 160 pounds, and claimed the 2016 NHSCA Senior National Championship at 170 pounds. Romero played a major role in propelling Buchanan High School to a California state title, as the Bears were ranked as the fifth-best high school team in the country.
The Beavers are getting another transfer in Lane Stigall who spent last season at Missouri. Stigall, from North Marion High School in Aurora, Ore., was a four-time Oregon state finalist and three-time Oregon state champion. During his redshirt season, Stigall wrestled to a record of 19-8 placing at four open tournaments at 149 pounds. He won the 149 pound freshman/sophomore division at the Lindenwood Open. Stigall placed third at the Maryville Brand Kaufman Open, and picked up a pair of fifth place finishes at the Roger Denker Open and the Harold Nichols Cyclone Open.
Russel Stigall joins the Beavers from North Marion High School, and as the younger brother to Lane Stigall. Russell was twice an Oregon state champion out of Aurora, Ore. He placed at the state tournament three times.
