Ellie Slama Caps Record-Setting Season At National Championships
May 21, 2019 | Women's Golf
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Ellie Slama carded a 2-over 75 in the final round of the NCAA Division I Women's Golf National Championships.
Slama improved her score each day to finish the championship with a 22-over 88-78-75--241 at the difficult par-73, 6,473-yard Blessings Golf Club. She qualified for the National Championships as one of the top three individuals not on a qualifying team during the NCAA Regionals in Cle Elum, Wash.
"Blessings is a beast of a golf course where the more you play it, the more you have a better grasp of how to play it," Oregon State head coach Dawn Shockley said. "Ellie improved every day by several shots. Her last round was more like the Ellie we all know. She gave herself opportunities to make birdies and she converted.
"Ellie has made a name for herself in women's golf. With her exceptional play all year, it was only fitting that she get to go compete at the National Championships. I'm excited to see what else this young woman will accomplish the next two years. She is a driven, well-rounded student-athlete who gives her all in both the classroom and on the course."
Slama finished her sophomore campaign with an Oregon State single-season scoring average record of 72.43. She was selected to the All-Pac-12 First Team, named Pac-12 Golfer of the Month for October, won the individual title at the Trinity Forest Invitational and set the program record with seven top-10 finishes.
"Nationals was a great experience," Slama said. "I believe our season prepared me well for the tough conditions and course. I am proud of the team for our performance at Regionals. Next year will be our year."
"Ellie has a busy summer of golf," Shockley said. "We look forward to getting her and the rest of the team back in September. We are very excited about our freshmen coming in and our five returners. We will do some offseason work and be ready to go in the fall."
The Beavers lose Olivia Benzin and Susie Cavanagh to graduation but return veterans Amanda Minni, Lauren Murphy, Mari Nishiura, Nicole Schroeder and Slama. Chayse Gomez (Fullerton, Calif.) and Issy Taylor (Upper Coomera, Queensland) join the program beginning with the 2019-20 season.
Oregon State qualified for NCAA Regionals for the third consecutive year under Shockley and assistant coach Kelly Kerkvliet. An individual advanced to the NCAA National Championships three straight years -- Cavanagh in 2017, Schroeder in 2018 and Slama this year.
This past season, the Beavers won the team title at the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown, posted seven top-five finishes and had the best scoring average (73.18) three-round score (26-under 838) and single-round score (10-under 278) in school history.
Benzin, Cavanagh, Minni, Nishiura, Schroeder and Slama all received Pac-12 All-Academic recognition. The six selections are the most of any school in the Pac-12 and the most in one year in the history of the program. The previous school record was four in 2010.
