Beavers In The Hunt At El Macero Classic
April 13, 2019 | Men's Golf
DAVIS, Calif. – The Oregon State men's golf team is in third place, and only three strokes out of the lead, with one round to play at the El Macero Classic.
The Beavers shot a 3-under 285 in the second round on Saturday at the par-72, 7,108-yard El Macero Country Club after opening with a 3-over 291 on Friday.
No. 10 Texas Tech leads the 15-team field with a 3-under 573 and Cal State Fullerton is second with a 1-under 575.
The final round of the three-day, 54-hole tournament begins at 7:30 a.m. on Sunday and live scoring is available at golfstat.com.
"For the opening five to eight holes we played some very poor golf," Oregon State head coach Jon Reehoorn said. "We didn't look comfortable, hit some poor shots and then compounded it with some more poor decisions.
"To see them respond like they did on the back nine was great. To have played the nine holes we did and still have another chance to win a golf tournament is a testament to the improvements these guys have made over the last eight to nine months.
"I'm confident they will come out loose and ready to go tomorrow. It will be fun to watch."
Freshman Sean Kato fired a career-best 6-under 66 with six birdies and no bogeys to move 32 spots up the leaderboard and into a tie for second place with a 2-under 76-66--142. His previous best collegiate score was a 4-under 67 and his best career finish is a tie for eighth place at the Duck Invitational.
Texas Tech teammates Sandy Scott and Ivan Ramirez share the individual lead and are a stroke ahead of Kato with a 3-under 141.
Spencer Tibbits is tied for ninth place with an even-par 71-73--144. He has six career top-10 finishes heading into Sunday's final round.
Shawn Lu had an eagle and four birdies to finish with a 3-under 69 and move 22 spots up the leaderboard and into a tie for 24th place with a 2-over 77-69--146.
Kyosuke Hara is tied for 29th place with a 3-over 70-77--147 and Nolan Thoroughgood is tied for 43rd with a 7-over 74-77--151.
Carson Barry is competing as an individual is tied for 38th with a 6-over 76-74--150.
