March 20, 2019 | Wrestling
CORVALLIS – Six student-athletes will represent Oregon State University this weekend at the 2019 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships beginning this Thursday, March 21 and concluding on Saturday, March 23 in Pittsburgh at the PPG Paints Arena.
ESPN will continue its coverage of the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships this season by streaming every mat and every match via the ESPN app, in addition to televised coverage of the evening sessions each day.
The Beavers are sending six competitors to this year's iteration of amateur wrestling's pinnacle event; Ronnie Bresser (125), Devan Turner (133), Grant Willits (141), Hunter Willits (157), Bob Coleman (184), Amar Dhesi (285).
Each wrestler in the tournament is seeded this year with Bresser (23-1) garnering the highest seed for Oregon State entering the weekend with the No. 4 seed. The redshirt senior, and returning All-American, is coming off his third Pac-12 Conference. Bresser will face No. 29-seeded Gage Curry of American in his first round match.
Devan Turner is making his first appearance at the championship event after picking up an allocation spot at the Pac-12 Championships. Turner finished in third, but won the true second-place match securing his spot in Pittsburgh. Turner (21-9) holds the No. 32 seed and will face No. 33-seeded Zack Trampe (Binghamton) in the pigtail round.
Another first-timer qualified for OSU at 141 pounds, Grant Willits (17-7). The redshirt freshman captured his first Pac-12 title after earning the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament. G. Willits is seeded at No. 31 and squares off with the No. 2 seed Joey McKenna of Ohio State in his opening match.
Grant is joined by his twin brother, and two-time NCAA qualifier, Hunter Willits (157 pounds). The sophomore is making his second consecutive appearance at the championship event, and looks to avenge his 0-2 performance a season ago. Hunter (19-8) takes the No. 28 seed into the tournament for a first round matchup with No. 5, and returning All-American, Hayden Hidlay of NC State.
The Willits twins are one of four sets of twins to be wrestling at the NCAA Championships. Three of the four sets happen to hail from Colorado, including the Willits (Pueblo, Colo.).
Bob Coleman came on at the right time moving his way through the Pac-12 bracket on the way to his first Pac-12 championship. Coleman (16-14) is seeded at No. 32 and opens the tournament with a pigtail match against No. 33 Chris Kober of Campbell.
The final qualifier for the Beavers is two-time All-American heavyweight Amar Dhesi. Dhesi is the highest finisher from the 2018 championship event to return to the 2019 NCAA Championships. After placing third last year, the graduate wrestled for Team Canada at the World Wrestling Championships before rejoining OSU midway through the season.
Dhesi captured his third Pac-12 title two weeks ago improving to 10-1 on the season. The Surrey, B.C. native entered the seeding show ranked No. 4 by multiple publications, but ultimately was seeded at No. 6. Dhesi will face No. 27 Ian Butterbrodt from Brown in his first round match.
