Beavers Climb Leaderboard At Amer Ari Invitational
February 08, 2019 | Men's Golf
WAIKOLOA, Hawai'i – Four Oregon State players finished in red figures in the second round of the 28th Annual Amer Ari Invitational on Friday to move the Beavers three spots up the leaderboard.
Sophomore Spencer Tibbits fired a 4-under 68, junior Kyosuke Hara and freshman Sean Kato both carded a 2-under 70, and senior Trevor Yu posted a 1-under 71.
The Beavers moved into ninth place in the competitive 18-team field with a 12-under 285-279--564 at the par-72, 7,074-yard Waikoloa Kings' Course. The 9-under 279 equals the eighth-lowest single-round score in program history.
The final round of the three-day, 54-hole tournament begins at 7:30 a.m. Hawai'i time (9:30 a.m. PT) on Friday and live scoring is available at golfstat.com.
No. 1 Oklahoma State continues to hold the team lead with a 36-under 540, while Cole Hammer of Texas took over the individual lead with a 13-under 67-64--131.
"This course is interesting because a lot of how your score looks depends on where you start on the course," Oregon State head coach Jon Reehoorn said. "We started on the harder stretch of the course and didn't get off to a great start.
"The guys did a really good job of staying patient and took advantage of the holes they needed to. With three par-5's in a five-hole stretch, 18-5, they hit the shots and made the putts you need to in order to compete at this course.
"It will be important to just keep doing what we have been doing the last two days. Make a few adjustments here and there and understand the flow of the course has a huge impact on your score."
Yu was solid for the second straight day, shooting a 1-under 71, and is the top Oregon State player on the leaderboard, tied for 24th place, with a 4-under 69-71--140.
Tibbits' excellent second round moved him 34 spots up the leaderboard and into a tie for 31st place with a 3-under 73-68--141.
Kato is also tied for 31st place with a 3-under 71-70--141 and Kyosuke is tied for 44th with a 2-under 72-70-142.
Junior Shawn Lu is tied for 72nd place with a 2-over 74-72--146.
Tibbits and Kato both eagled the par-5, 513-yard fourth hole, while Lu and Yu each got an eagle on the par-5, 501-yard 18th hole.
Freshman Nolan Thoroughgood, who is competing as an individual, shot a 4-over 76 on Friday after opening the tourney with a career-best 5-under 67. He sits in a tie for 51st place heading into the final round.
