Beavers Finish Fourth At Westbrook Spring Invitational
February 25, 2019 | Women's Golf
PEORIA, Ariz. – It was a great start to the spring season for the Oregon State women's golf team.
The Beavers finished in fourth place at the 16-team Westbrook Spring Invitational after shooting an 8-under 286-287-283--856 at the par-72, 6,432-yard Westbrook Village Golf Club Vistas Course.
Nebraska won the team title with an 11-under 853, Oklahoma was second with a 10-under 854 and Illinois finished third with a 9-under 855.
Oregon State's 8-under 856 is the third-lowest three-round score in program history. The Beavers never finished a three-round tournament under par in their first 41 years and have now done it four times the last two seasons.

850 (-14) -- Westbrook Spring Invitational -- Peoria, Ariz. (Spring 2018)

872 (+8) -- PING/ASU Invitational -- Tempe, Ariz. (Spring 2017)
873 (+9) -- Rose City Collegiate -- Aurora, Ore. (Fall 2015)
The successful start to the spring season makes it five top-five finishes in six tournaments in 2018-19 for head coach Dawn Shockley and the Beavers.
Oregon State finished in second place in its first two tournaments of the fall, the East West Match Play Challenge and the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational, won the team title at the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown and finished third at the Trinity Forest Invitational.
"It was a good team effort this week and fun to see the team getting better and wanting more," Oregon State head coach Dawn Shockley said. "I know this team is capable of more, but I love the fight out there.
"Mentally they were tough and that's what I'm proud of. We talked a lot about that and they showed it this week. Unfortunately, we finished a few shots back from a win. So we will get back after it and be ready to go for our next tournament."
Ellie Slama and Mari Nishiura led the Beavers in the first tourney of the spring, as they both finished in a tie for 11th place with a 3-under 213. Slama had rounds of 70-72-71 and Nishiura posted scores of 74-69-70.
Nicole Schroeder had one tough hole in the final round, but continued to battle throughout the day, and finished in a tie for 19th place with a 1-under 69-70-76--215.
Olivia Benzin finished in a tie for 43rd place with a 3-over 73-76-70--219 and Susie Cavanagh finished in a tie for 72nd with an 8-over 75-77-72--224.
Freshman Lauren Murphy competed in her first collegiate tournament as an individual and finished in a tie for 78th with a 9-over 73-80-72--225.
The Beavers have two weeks off before competing at the Wildcat Invitational in Tucson, Ariz., on Monday, March 11 and Tuesday, March 12.
