Schroeder Leads Beavers On Day One In Arizona
February 24, 2019 | Women's Golf
PEORIA, Ariz. – Nicole Schroeder fired a pair of sub-par rounds on Sunday to lead the Oregon State women's golf team in their first tournament of the spring season.
The Beavers opened the two-day, 54-hole Westbrook Spring Invitational with a 3-under 286-287--573 to put them in a tie for fourth place in the 16-team field.
Nebraska holds the lead through 36 holes with a 13-under 563, while Mississippi State is second (6-under 570), Oklahoma is third (5-under 571), and Denver and Michigan are tied with Oregon State for fourth (3-under 573).
The final round begins with a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m. PT (8:30 a.m. MT) on Tuesday and live scoring is available at birdiefire.com.
"It was a steady start for us," Oregon State head coach Dawn Shockley said. "We are in a good position to go out tomorrow and compete for a win. We can't control what the other teams do, but we can control what we do.
"Our goal is to be the toughest team out there and let the rest happen. We know we worked hard in the offseason and now we just have to go out and have fun."
Schroeder started the tourney with a 3-under 69 at the par-72, 6,432-yard Westbrook Village Golf Club Vistas Course that included six birdies. She dropped in four more birdies on the second 18 to shoot a 2-under 70 and finish the day with a 5-under 139 that has her in a tie for fifth place.
Ellie Slama carded a bogey-free 2-under 70 in the morning and an even-par 72 in the afternoon and is tied for 15th place with a 2-under 142. She has posted 10 rounds in red figures this season, equaling the total she had during last year's record-breaking freshman campaign.
Mari Nishiura is a stroke back of Slama and tied for 17th after posting a 2-over 74 and a career-best 3-under 69 for a 1-under 143. Her previous best score was a pair of 2-under 70's at the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown this past fall.
Olivia Benzin shot a 5-over 73-76--149 and Susie Cavanagh finished the day with an 8-over 75-77--152.
Freshman Lauren Murphy, who is making her collegiate debut as an individual, posted a 9-over 73-80--153.
