Beavers Win Four Bouts, Fall to No. 12 Iowa State

CORVALLIS – The Oregon State wrestling team picked up four wins but fell short to No. 12 Iowa State inside of Gill Coliseum on a rainy Monday night.
The Beavers (4-7, 2-1 Pac-12) lost to the visiting No. 12 Cyclones (10-2, 6-1 Big 12) by a final score of 23-14 in the 17th all-time meeting between the two schools.
Starting with the lightest weight class, redshirt senior Ronnie Bresser continued to make it look easy on the mat with his 19th win of the season. No. 3-ranked Bresser quickly went up by a point after an opening whistle unnecessary roughness call. The Klamath Falls native used a takedown in each period winning by decision, 9-5.
It was a tough matchup for Devan Turner at 133 pounds as he faced the No. 8 wrestler in the country in Austin Gomez. Turner fell behind early in the match, and lost by fall in the third period.
Grant Willits picked up a huge victory for the Beavers at 141 pounds, earning his first win over a ranked opponent in his career. Willits used a takedown into a four-point near fall four a 6-0 lead in the first period. He rode out No. 11 Ian Parker for the entirety of the second period, en route to a 9-4 decision victory.
The Beavers nearly had another upset at 149 pounds with the match being decided in the final thirty seconds of the match. Josh Reyes gave up the first takedown, but answered with a reversal trailing 3-2 after the first period. Two takedowns in the second period gave Reyes an advantage, but it was No. 7 Jarrett Degen (ISU) who came out on top by decision 11-7.
Zech Bresser made his second start of the season for Oregon State at 157 pounds. A competitive first period netted Bresser a 2-2 tie, but couldn't overcome a second period deficit falling by decision 8-3.
Following the intermission the dual resumed at 165 pounds with Oregon State's Aaron Olmos battling Logan Schumacher (ISU). Olmos was the only one to earn points in the first period, leading 2-0. Olmos held a 6-4 lead late in the match, but gave up a takedown in the final ten seconds. In sudden victory, it was Iowa State who edged Olmos by decision, 6-4.
Oregon State got its second upset of the night at 174 pounds thanks to Colt Doyle. Doyle used a 12-6 decision earning his fourth-straight victory. Doyle collected two takedowns in the first period and never looked back on the way to the win. This was Doyle's first win over a ranked opponent in his OSU career.
Iowa State picked up wins at 184 and 197 pounds by major decision. Bob Coleman lost to his high school teammate Sam Colbray, while Jamarcus Grant dropped a major decision to No. 6 Willie Miklus.
In the final bout of the evening, No. 3 Amar Dhesi picked up a takedown in the first ten seconds of the bout setting the tone for the seven-minute match. Dhesi totaled eight takedowns, a reversal and a four-point near fall en route to a 23-8 technical fall win.
