Oregon State duo earn more national recognition
CORVALLIS – Oregon State star guards Mikayla Pivec and Destiny Slocum have both been named to the Watch List for the 2019-20 Ann Meyers Drysdale Award, the US Basketball Writers Association announced Thursday.
Â
Members of the association's board of directors chose the 35 players to be included on the list as contenders for the National Player of the Year. The 2019-20 Ann Meyers Drysdale Award winner will be presented at the 2020 NCAA Women's Final Four in New Orleans, along with the Tamika Catchings Award honoring the women's freshman player of the year.
Â
Pivec and Slocum were both included on the watch lists for the Wooden Award, Wade Trophy and Naismith Trophy, all of which honor the national player of the year. Pivec is among the watch list members for the Cheryl Miller Award (best small forward), while Slocum is on the list for the Lieberman Award (best point guard).
Â
Pivec leads the Beavers in points, rebounds, assists and steals through the first seven games of the season. She is shooting 57.9 percent from the floor, and was named the Preseason WNIT Tournament MVP. Pivec is among the top-11 in Oregon State history in both career points and career rebounds, and was a preseason All-Pac-12 selection.
Â
Slocum is averaging 14.9 point per game, while shooting 51.4 percent from the floor. She was named to the Preseason WNIT All-Tournament Team, and scored her 1,000th career point last Friday in Miami. Slocum has scored at least 15 points in 23 of her 40 games with the Beavers, and has a total of 16 20-point games in her collegiate career.
Â
As a team, the Beavers are off to a 7-0 start, and are up to No. 5 in both major polls. Oregon State will host Hawaii Friday at 7 p.m.
