Beavers Fall to No. 2 Nebraska, 32-3
December 20, 2019 | Wrestling
LINCOLN, Neb. – The Oregon State Wrestling team fell to No. 2 Nebraska, 32-3, on Friday night after a tough battle inside the Devaney Center.
The Beavers struggled to find a rhythm against a talented Husker squad as the Oregon State faced six grapplers ranked inside the top-ten of their respective weight class (Intermat).
Redshirt junior Devan Turner recorded his 13th win of the season and moved to 3-0 in dual meets with a hard-fought win over Nebraska's Ridge Lovett. Oregon State couldn't overcome a fast start by the Huskers and moved to 2-1 in dual meets.
The match started at 174 pounds with Colton Beisley dropping the first bout of the night by technical fall, 20-5, to No. 6 Mikey Labriola. Colt Doyle moved up to 184 pounds against No. 5 Taylor Lenz and dropped a 9-0 major decision to put the Beavers in a 9-0 hole after two bouts.
Next, at 197, J.J. Dixon was tied with No. 10 Eric Schultz after the first period but a trio of late takedowns ended the sophomore's night by technical fall, 21-5, to put the Beavers in a tougher situation.
In the heavyweight spot, Jamarcus Grant fought valiantly to the end but ultimately dropped a last-second decision to No. 15 Christian Lance by a score of 5-4. Grant earned a clutch takedown with 11 seconds remaining to lead 4-3 before Lance responded with two points of his own to win the bout as time expired.
Turner shined at 133 pounds as he defeated No. 10 Lovett by decision, 6-2, and moved his season record to 12-4. Turner was a bright spot for the Beavers as he picked up two takedowns including one in the final seconds of the third period. As the clock hit zero, Turner's two-point nearfall would secure the win and move the team score to 17-3.
At 141 pounds, Grant Willits couldn't hold on to mount a comeback against No. 6 Chad Red Jr. and dropped a 6-2 decision.
Lane Stigall showed positive strides at the 149-spot as he fought to within a point of No. 12 Colin Purinton in the third period. Two takedowns in the final minute proved costly for Stigall as he dropped an 8-4 decision.
The Huskers finished off the night winning their final bouts by technical fall and major decision, providing the final score of 32-3.
