Beavers Fall to Ducks in Civil War, 24-10
November 30, 2019 | Football
EUGENE, Ore. – Oregon State dropped a hard-fought defensive battle on Saturday afternoon as they fell to Oregon, 24-10, inside Autzen Stadium for the 123rd edition of the Civil War .
In his first career start, Tristan Gebbia took the reins of the offense and finished the day completing 26-of-40 passes for 243 yards. Jermar Jefferson paced the Beavers on the ground with 81 yards and one touchdown. Isaiah Hodgins picked up 85 yards through the air while Trevon Bradford added 53 yards of his own.
The Beavers won the total yardage battle for the game, 380-365, and also earned the advantage on passing with 243 total yards.
The defense shined throughout the contest on a frigid afternoon as the Beavers collected 70 total tackles including two sacks and a forced fumble. Omar Speights Jr. led the way with 10 tackles and six solo stops including a sack and a tackle-for-loss.
A precise and measured opening drive by the Beavers quickly evened the score to a field goal apiece after each teams opening drive. Despite Gebbia completing 10-of-16 passes in the first half, the Beavers still trailed 17-3 heading into the break.
A pair of defensive stops helped give the Beavers much-needed momentum in the third quarter. A missed 24-yard field goal by the Ducks helped keep the Beavers within striking distance.
To open the final quarter, the Beavers found their rhythm as Jermar Jefferson trotted into the end zone for a 19-yard score to cap off an 87-yard drive and pull within a touchdown, 17-10, with under eight minutes remaining.
An ensuing Oregon touchdown was overturned on review as the Duck's wideout Jaylon Reed lost the ball on his way into the end zone to give the ball back to the Beavers at their own 20.
Things became interesting as the Beavers were stopped a yard shy from a key first down on a fourth-and-five attempt but would then force Oregon to its third three-and-out of the game.
A costly turnover sealed the game as a 10-yard catch and hurdle by Jefferson resulted in a recovered fumble by the Ducks to seal the game with two minutes remaining. Another trip into the end zone for Oregon on the its next drive provided the final result.
The Beavers wrapped up the season with a 5-7 record including a 4-5 mark in conference play.
