Beavers Fall in Three Against Bruins
November 24, 2019 | Women's Volleyball
LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Maddie Goings tallied a dozen kills to pace the Oregon State offense, but the Beavers' volleyball team fell in three sets at UCLA Sunday afternoon.
With the loss, the Beavers' record falls to 9-20 overall and 3-15 in the Pac-12, while the Bruins improved to 16-11, 11-7. Set scores were 23-25, 13-25 and 16-25.
"Maddie Goings did a good job today. She hadn't been starting and we put her in the lineup today and she took advantage of that," head coach Mark Barnard said. "And Kory Cheshire was very good as well. But inconsistency bit us again. We didn't serve well, we didn't pass particularly well. We just need to be more focused and consistent in our play."
The opening set was one of short bursts. Oregon State trailed 8-4 early on, but used a 4-0 run capitalizing on a Serena Bruin kill and a bevy of UCLA errors to tie the match at 8-8. The score remained tied at 12-12 until the Bruins opened a three point lead at 16-13. But again, the Beavers fought back as Amy Underdown, Haylie Bennett and Goings notched successive kills to tie the score at 17. OSU took the lead at 20-19 but UCLA slipped back into the lead and scored the last two points to steal the set, 25-23.
OSU fell behind quickly in the second set taking a timeout trailing 7-2. However, a 4-1 run by the Beavers with kills coming from Goings, Montanna Gubrud, Cheshire and Underdown forced a UCLA timeout. The short break worked to stem the momentum for the Bruins, who promptly went on a 10-1 run. UCLA would hold on to take the second set, 25-13, and a two sets to none advantage at the intermission.
The Beavers had the scored knotted at 4-4 early in the third set, but the Bruins once again pushed out to a 16-8 lead following a prolonged run. The Beavers stabilized late in the set as Goings recorded a pair of kills and Chloe Brown put one on the floor as well, but the Bruins hung to finish the set, 25-16, to win the match.
Game Notes: Maddie Goings led the OSU offense with 12 kills and Kory Cheshire added six without an error … Grace Massey accumulated a team-high 14 digs … Cheshire recorded a match-high four.
Next Up: Oregon State is back on the court next week to finish the season with road matches at Utah Wednesday at 3 p.m. PT and at Oregon at 5 p.m. on Friday.
