Goings Tallies 18 Kills, Beavers Fall to No. 17 Utes
November 27, 2019 | Women's Volleyball
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Junior outside hitter Maddie Goings registered 18 kills to lead the Beavers' offense, but the OSU volleyball team fell to No. 17 Utah in three sets Wednesday afternoon.
With the loss, the Beavers' record falls to 9-21 overall and 3-16 in the Pac-12, while the Utes improved to 21-9, 13-6. Set scores were 16-25, 22-25 and 18-25.
"Maddie Goings was very good today. She was really our only hitter that got going and she stayed with it throughout the match," head coach Mark Barnard said. "Grace (Massey) was solid as well and I thought Montanna (Gubrud) and Mary Kate (Lopez) did some good things too, especially attacking."
"We passed poorly early in the first set, but corrected that and hung around the rest of the match. But we continue to struggle with inconsistency."
The opening set was close early with the teams tied at 7-7. OSU used a 4-0 run fueled by a pair of kills each by Goings and Haylie Bennett to make it 12-12 and forcing a Utah timeout. Another termination by Goings and a Serena Bruin kill put the Beavers ahead at 14-13 but the Utes answered. Utah scored the next seven points and were unfazed by a pair of Oregon State timeouts securing the set, 25-16.
It didn't look good for the Beavers early in the second as they fell behind 5-2, but OSU slowly climbed back into it using a variety of methods in a 4-2 run. A back row attack by Amy Underdown, coupled with a block by Bruin and a dump by Gubrud brought the Beavers within one at 8-7. The Beavers were down five at 16-11 before fighting back again to within one at 18-17 as Goings, Bennett and Lindsey Schell recorded kills and Bruin added an ace. Utah pushed back out to a 23-18 advantage and the Beavers fought off a pair of set points but the Utes held on to take the second set, 25-22.
Oregon State fell behind early in the third as Utah burst to a 20-9 lead. The Beavers rallied with eight straight points and 10 out of 12 as Goings knocked down four kills and Bruin notched a pair of blocks during the flurry. But it was too late and the Utes took the set, 25-18, and match.
Game Notes: Maddie Goings registered 18 kills against the Utes giving her 997 kills in her career. She moved into 16th on OSU's all-time kills list moving past Pia Ahlengard (982 kills from 1995-97) and Tricia Becker (996, 1987-90) … junior libero Grace Massey finished the match with 12 digs giving her 1,487 career digs moving past Becker and into a tie for third all-time with Kayla Ellis (2015-18) … Serena Bruin led the Beavers' defense at the net with five blocks.
Next Up: OSU returns to the Beaver State tonight and will conclude the 2019 season Friday against Oregon, in Eugene. The match is set for a 5 p.m. start and will air live on Pac-12 Oregon.
