Beavers Drop Heartbreaker To Cougars, 54-53
November 23, 2019 | Football
Jermar Jefferson accounted for four scores on the night and led the Beavers on the ground with 132 yards and a pair of rushing touchdowns. Jefferson also picked up 52 yards through the air with two touchdowns including a 39-yard reception late in the contest. The sophomore scored on three consecutive drives during a three-minute span in the fourth quarter but the Cougars would counter with a pair of touchdown drives to spoil the night.
Champ Flemings led the way for the Beavers in receiving as he picked up 110 yards on four catches with his lone touchdown coming by way of a 46-yard reception in the second quarter.
Sixth year quarterback Jake Luton completed 22-of-40 passes for 408 yards and five touchdowns, marking the second five-touchdown game of his career. The Beavers accumulated 601 yards of total offense and outrushed the Cougars for the game 195-93.
Defensively, the Beavers forced a season-high five turnovers including interceptions by John McCartan, Nahshon Wright and Omar Speights. Avery Roberts notched 10 total tackles with eight solo stops while Shawn Wilson added six total tackles with four solo stops.
A high-powered first half featured the Beaver defense forcing three turnovers which started with McCartan picking off Washington State on the goal line for Oregon State's first takeaway of the game. On the ensuing drive, Jefferson showcased his speed as he took off for his first of four touchdowns on a 54-yard run.
Luton then found Flemings on 46-yard strike which put the Beavers up 14-7 for the time being. Another 18-yard pass from Luton to Noah Togiai evened the score, 21- 21, after the Cougars scored on consecutive drives.
The Beaver offense stalled in the second half and found themselves suddenly trailing, 35-24, heading into a crucial fourth quarter for both teams. A back-and-forth game would continue as both teams put up 185 yards and combined for seven total touchdowns in the final quarter.
A leaping 28-yard touchdown reception over four Cougar defenders by tight end Teagan Qutoriano was capped off by Artavis Pierce rushing for the two-point conversion which brought the Beavers within a field goal at the start of the final stanza.
Luton would then engineer a solid touchdown drive which resulted in a five-yard Jefferson rush but the Beavers still trailed 42-39 with under six minutes remaining and needed stops down the stretch.
The defense heard the call as Andre Bodden recovered an onside kick which gave the ball back to the Beavers at their own 49. Oregon State took advantage of the opportunity by going three plays and 51 yards as Luton found Jefferson for his third score of the night on a crucial 39-yard reception to lead 46-42.
The momentum shifted in Oregon State's favor when Omar Speights came away with the team's third interception of the night to put them back in business at the WSU 27-yard line.
Jefferson couldn't be stopped late as he scored his third touchdown in three minutes to give Oregon State a 53-42 lead. Washington State would go on to foil the Beavers' bowl bid by responding with a pair of touchdowns and providing the final score.
