November 14, 2019 | Women's Gymnastics
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Four outstanding student-athletes have officially made their commitments to the Oregon State Gymnastics program for the 2020-21 season, head coach Tanya Chaplin announced on Thursday.
The 2020 recruiting class consists of Sydney Gonzales (Newport Beach, Calif. / Wildfire Gymnastics), Kaitlyn Hoiland (Kent, Wash. / Hart's Gymnastics Center), Anna Yeates (Roseville, Calif. / Byers Gymnastics Center - Roseville) and Ariana Young (San Mateo, Calif. / San Mateo Gymnastics).
"We are very excited about this wonderful group of young women that will join our program in the fall," Chaplin said. "They are excellent students, strong competitors and great teammates. They have all demonstrated the ability to work through difficult challenges and overcome obstacles during their club gymnastics career. This talented group will help to continue the legacy and excellence of Oregon State Gymnastics."
Sydney Gonzales, the daughter of Ruben and Christine Gonzales and the younger sister of current OSU junior Lexie Gonzales, is a five-time Junior Olympic National Championships qualifier. In 2017, she finished third in the all-around at J.O. Championships and a J.O. National Team member and was the J.O. national champion on the vault in 2016. Last season, Gonzales won the Region 1 (Senior C) all-around and uneven bars titles and earned second and fourth-place finishes on vault and floor exercise respectively. She went on to finish third on the vault, fifth on the bars and ninth in the all-around at J.O. Championships. She earned regional titles on vault and floor in 2018 with bronze finishes on beam and in the all-around.
"Sydney is a dynamic all-around gymnast that has been very successful in the Junior Olympic program. Her impact will be immediate and we know her so well through her sister, Lexie, it feels like she is already part of our gymnastics family."
She is coached by former OSU gymnast Whitney Watson Dames, Stephanie Calvert, Tom Wakeling, Hayley Butler and Rick Watson at Wildfire Gymnastics.
Kaitlyn Hoiland, the daughter of Matthew and Kathrine Hoiland, is a three-time J.O. national qualifier. In 2019, Hoiland secured wins in the all-around, vault and bars, while finishing second on the floor and third on the beam at Region 2 Championships. Her 2018 season was highlighted by a Region 2 championship title on the bars with second-place finishes on vault, beam, floor and in the all-around. She also won a Washington State title on the bars in 2018.
"Kaitlyn is very strong on bars and beam but perhaps her greatest strength is her positive attitude and excellent work ethic. We look forward to Kaitlyn joining the team and helping her to reach her potential in our program.
Hoiland trains at Hart's Gymnastics Center under David Hart.
Anna Yeates, the daughter of Tracy and Venda Yeates, is a three-time J.O. National Championship qualifier. Yeates earned an eighth-place finish in the all-around at J.O. Nationals in 2017. She finished 16th in the all-around at nationals in 2019 with a 12th place finish on the beam and 13th on the vault. She also finished second on the vault, fourth on the floor and sixth in the all-around at Region 1 Championships last season. In 2018, Yeates garnered third on the vault, fourth in the all-around and fifth on the floor at Region 1.
"Anna is an excellent gymnast and a fierce competitor. Her enthusiastic personality and love for the sport is contagious. She will bring a lot of talent and energy to our team next season."
Yeats trains at Byers Gymnastics Center - Roseville under coaches Rhonda Hawkins, Elisha Quinonez and Addie McLaughlin.
Ariana Young, the daughter of William and Anna Young, is a two-time J.O. National Championship qualifier. Young finished 6th in the all-around at nationals in 2019 and was second on the balance beam. She also won the all-around and beam titles at Region 1 (Senior B) Championships while also earning silver medal finishes on vault and floor in 2019. Young was the NorCal State Championships runner-up on vault, floor and in the all-around last season as well. In 2018, Young earned a sixth-place finish on the beam at J.O. Nationals and added a floor title at Region 1 Championships.
"Ariana is a graceful and powerful gymnast. We noticed her right away at J.O. National Championships. She just commands your attention when she competes and we are very excited to have her join our program. We expect her to be a strong contributor on all four events."
Young trains at San Mateo Gymnastics, the same gym that current OSU gymnasts Lacy and Madi Dagen came from, under coaches Armen Astonian and Oksana Bystrova.
