Beavers Fall No. 14 Huskies Despite Bennett’s 19 Kills
November 10, 2019 | Women's Volleyball
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Haylie Bennett converted kills early and often for the Oregon State volleyball team, but it wasn't enough to overcome No. 14 Washington Sunday afternoon at Gill Coliseum. Amy Underdown came off the bench to contribute 10 kills in the four set match.
Oregon State answered the call after dropping the opening set, coming back to tie the match at a set each at the intermission.
With the loss the Beavers dropped to 9-16 overall and 3-11 in Pac-12 play, while Washington's record improved to 19-5, 10-4. Set scores were 16-25, 25-22, 13-25 and 23-25.
"Today was much better than Thursday," head coach Mark Barnard said. "We tried to serve short to try to take them out of their system. It worked some and we reaped some rewards, but we just weren't effective enough at it."
"Haylie Bennett did an outstanding job today and Amy (Underdown) did a very nice job coming off the bench to help. Today was as good of a team effort. We played everyone. I wanted to give a lot of people a chance to make a difference and that is as well as we've done. They all did a good job of sticking with it to the end."
Trailing by a point early in the first set, Washington went on a 5-0 run to take the momentum and the lead at 9-5. The Beavers would never close the gap to less than four the rest of the period, losing the set, 25-16.
OSU came back in the second going out to a three point advantage out of the gate and using a three-point flurry, including a pair of Underdown kills, to extend the lead to 11-5 forcing a UW timeout. The Huskies fired back out of the break closing the gap to 13-12. Washington held the lead at 19-17 before the Beavers scored on back-to-back-to-back kills by Underdown, Lindsey Schell and Bennett to regain the lead at 20-19. With the score tied at 22-22, OSU used Bennett's seventh kill of the set to go up 23-22. Kory Cheshire won a one-on-one battle on the outside recording an solo block to give the Beavers set point and Chloe Brown finished the scoring with her sixth kill of the match giving OSU the set, 25-22.
With the match even at one set each, Washington returned from the intermission on a mission. UW used a 6-0 burst to take the lead at 9-4 and kept the pressure on. The Huskies opened up a 20-10 lead before the Beavers could gain any sort of traction when Maddie Goings registered a kill and a block on back-to-back plays making it 20-12. UW hung on to take the set 25-13, and the lead in the match at two sets to one.
The Beavers had designs on extending the match as they opened the fourth set. OSU made a 4-1 run to gain the lead 8-5 and continued to hold a three-point lead at 12-9 until UW crept back to tie the score at 14. The Huskies continued to press gaining a two-point lead at 19-17. OSU scrapped to stay within striking distance recycling the ball and taking advantage of UW errors. The Beavers fought off set point at 24-22 with Bennett's 19th kill of the day, but the Huskies converted once more to take the set, 25-23, and the match.
Game Notes: Haylie Bennett knocked down a team-best 19 kills and Amy Underdown added 10 to lead the OSU offense … Montanna Gubrud registered her third double-double of the season with 36 assists and 13 digs … Grace Massey held down the back row defense with a team-best 15 digs, while freshman defensive specialist added a career-high six digs … Lindsey Schell recorded a team-high three blocks.
