Black edges Orange, 26-25, in annual Orange & Black Dual

Sophomore Brandon Kaylor won the first bout of the night for the Black squad, picking up a major decision over freshman Kade Uyesaka for an 11-1 result and an early 4-0 lead for the Black team.
Freshman Luciano Fusalo was pitted against fellow freshman Gaven Jolley and won by decision, 9-8, in the second bout of the night to extend the Black lead to an early 7-0 advantage.
Redshirt junior Devan Turner returned to the mat after being one of three current Beavers to qualify for the NCAA Championships last season. Turner won by decision over freshman Wayne Newman, 10-4, and earned a quick three points for the Orange team.
The fourth bout of the night once again pitted two freshman against each other with Noah Mirelez earning a major decision over Daniel McClung, 10-1, to even up the team scoring temporarily.
The Black squad went back in front in the next match with redshirt junior Conner Noonan winning by major decision over sophomore Peyton Bell, 12-3, to give the Black four points and an 11-7 lead.
Another NCAA qualifier from last season, Grant Willits, won his bout at 125 lbs. over sophomore Riley Gurr by a decision of 7-2 to make things interesting for the Orange squad as they inched within a point of the lead, 11-10. The next bout featured freshmen Lane Stigall and Logan Meek battling in the 149 weight class with Meek picking up a hard-fought victory, winning by decision over Stigall by a score of 9-7 to give the Orange their first lead of the night.
Freshman Robbie Garcia extended the Orange lead to 17-11 by getting a major decision over sophomore Michael Murphy. The match continued with redshirt sophomore Colton Beisley evening things up as he earned a fall against freshman Ein Carlos and a much-needed six points for the Black squad.
Redshirt sophomore Colt Doyle earned another six points for the Black team and won by injury default over sophomore Jackson McKinney. Doyle is currently ranked No. 24 in his weight class (174) according to FloWrestling's preseason rankings.
The last three bouts made for a great finish as sophomore J.J. Dixon impressed with a technical fall over Adam Rateb, 17-1, to move within a point of the Black squad with two heavyweight bouts remaining to close out the night.
In the first heavyweight battle of the match, redshirt sophomore Brian Barnes won by decision over sophomore Hayden Still, 4-3. The final bout featured redshirt junior Jamarcus Grant winning by decision over redshirt senior Christian Robertson, 6-5. However, the previous heavyweight battle gave the Black team enough to escape with a one point edge, 26-25, to close out the annual scrimmage.
