October 31, 2019 | Women's Basketball
Oregon State was tabbed as No. 7 by the AP on Wednesday
CORVALLIS – The Oregon State women's basketball team will enter the 2019-20 season ranked No. 6 in the USA Today/WBCA Coaches' Poll, the highest preseason ranking in program history.
OSU's previous best preseason ranking in the Coaches' Poll was No. 9 at the starts of the 2015-16 and 2018-19 seasons. The Beavers' highest ranking in any major poll came after the team's Final Four run in 2016 when the Women's Basketball Coaches' Association placed OSU at No. 2. The Associated Press tabbed the Beavers as No. 7 in their preseason poll, which was released yesterday.
Oregon State has received national rankings from a number of sources in the preseason, notably ESPNW, which placed the Beavers at No. 6. Athlon Sports also had OSU at No. 6, while Lindy's Sports placed the team at No. 7.
OSU played its first exhibition of the season Sunday when it took down Union (Tenn.) 95-41 at Gill Coliseum. Freshmen Taylor Jones exploded in her debut, putting up 27 points, 12 rebounds and five blocks. Destiny Slocum tallied 16 points, while Mikayla Pivec put up 14 points and pulled down nine rebounds. Freshman Kennedy Brown rounded out four Beavers in double-figures with 12 points.
The Beavers will host their second exhibition of the year on Friday when Concordia (Ore.) visits Gill Coliseum (free admission). OSU's preseason slate will also feature a matchup with Team USA, Nov. 4 at Gill Coliseum. Tickets for that game can be purchased here.
Oregon State is one of the most successful programs in the last decade of the sport. The Beavers have appeared in every WBCA Coaches' Poll since the end of the 2013-14 season. Four returning starters and nine overall letterwinners return from last year's team that went 26-8, advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the sixth straight year, and played in the Sweet 16 for the fourth consecutive season. ESPNW has tabbed the Beavers No. 6 in its "Way Too Early" rankings the 2019-20 season.
