Slama, Taylor Lead Beaver Rally At Waverley
October 01, 2019 | Women's Golf
PORTLAND, Ore. – Ellie Slama and Issy Taylor both fired sub-par scores in the final round of the Molly Collegiate Invitational on Tuesday to lead a rally by the Oregon State women's golf team.
A horn sounded to start the round and the Beavers went to work, making a comeback that was worthy of their No. 4 national ranking.
Oregon State shot a 2-over 290 in the final round, the second-best score of the day in the 11-team field, to finish in fifth place with a 33-over 309-298-290--897 at the par-72, 6,242-yard Waverley Country Club.
The Beavers leaped over Colorado and Washington in the final round to record a top-five finish.
"This was a great finish by our team after struggling the first day," Oregon State head coach Dawn Shockley said. "They did a great job adapting and learning from their mistakes. I'm very proud of how they took ownership of their games.
"My team and I want to thank everyone at Waverley Country Club, the Oregon Golf Association and all of the volunteers for making this a great event."
Slama carded a 2-under 70 in the final round that moved her into a tie for 13th place with an 8-over 78-76-70--224. She bogeyed her second hole, the par-3 11th, but got the stroke back with a birdie on the par-5 13th. The All-Pac-12 golfer then reeled off three straight birdies at the par-5 17th, par-5 18th and par-4 first holes.
"Ellie continues to show why she's one of the best players in the country," Shockley said.
The biggest comeback of the tournament was by Taylor. After her first round was disqualified for signing a scorecard with the wrong score, the freshman rallied with an even-par 72 in the second round and a 4-under 68 in the final round.
On Tuesday Taylor posted two birdies going out and had an eagle on the par-5, 451-yard fifth hole and followed that with a birdie on the par-3, 157-yard sixth. The 4-under 68 equals the best round of her career, which she set in her first collegiate event at the Cougar Cup in Pullman, Wash.
"I'm very pleased with the way Issy came back and learned from the unfortunate mistake of getting DQ'd," Shockley said. "She stepped up and really helped the team with a great final round."
Senior Nicole Schroeder finished in a tie for 26th place with a 13-over 78-74-77--229. Her hole-in-one in Monday's second round was the second of her life and the first in competition.
Freshman Chayse Gomez finished in a tie for 28th place with a 14-over 76-79-75--230 and senior Mari Nishiura finished in a tie for 33rd with a 15-over 77-76-78--231.
Junior Amanda Minni (t-47, 19-over 77-81-77--235) and sophomore Lauren Murphy (t-60, 29-over 88-78-79--245) both competed as individuals for Oregon State.
Stanford won the team title with a 4-under 860 and Andrea Lee of Stanford claimed medalist honors with a 6-under 210.
The Beavers will next compete at the Stanford Intercollegiate, which is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 11 through Sunday, Oct. 13.
"I'm looking forward to learning from the week and preparing for a very strong field at the Stanford event," Shockley said.
