January 11, 2019 | Baseball
DURHAM, N.C. – Oregon State junior Adley Rutschman has been named the recipient of the prestigious Richard "Dick" W. Case Award, which is given annually to USA Baseball's top player in honor of the organization's founding Executive Director and CEO.
USA Baseball announced Thursday that Rutschman, a native of Sherwood, Ore., is the 12th player from the program's Collegiate National Team to receive the award. Past collegiate team recipients include major leaguers Ryan Zimmerman (2005), Stephen Strasburg (2008) and Carlos Rodon (2013).
Rutschman, who reported to Team USA days after being named the Most Outstanding Player at the College World Series, batted .355 with five doubles in nine games with the club.
Per Team USA: "In addition, Rutschman personified the off-field qualities that the Richard W. "Dick" Case Award honors. The catcher was the quintessential teammate and an undisputed leader in the clubhouse while also exemplifying sportsmanship and love of the game throughout the summer."
Rutschman returns to OSU for his junior season in 2019 after batting .408 as a sophomore – the third-best single-season average in school history. He broke the school's single-season records for hits (102) and runs batted in (83). He also broke the College World Series record for most hits in one year at 17.
