Beavers Comeback Falls Short at Nevada
September 15, 2018 | Football
The Beavers (1-2, 0-0 Pac-12) attempted a late comeback but fell short against the Wolfpack (2-1, 0-0 Mountain West), 37-35 in the first meeting between the two programs since 1999.
Timmy Hernandez made a career-high 11 receptions for a career-high 116 yards marking the first time OSU had two receivers with 10 catches in the same game since Shane Morales and Sammie Stoughter in a 2008 game at Stanford.
Connor Blount made his second career start at quarterback going 12-for-20 with 175 yards and one touchdown. Jake Luton saw action beginning in the second quarter and finished 23-for-35 for 284 yards and one score.
Nevada scored the game's first touchdown on their opening drive leading 7-0 early. The Beavers responded with a 10-play 75-yard drive down the field chewing up 3:45 off the clock that ended in a 5-yard strike from Blount to Hodgins, his first touchdown reception of the season.
The Wolfpack built up a 30-7 lead before the Beavers tacked on two touchdowns in the final five minutes of the first half pulling within 30-21. Jermar Jefferson capped a 7-play drive with a two-yard rushing touchdown, while Luton hit Hodgins for a 3-yard touchdown strike right before halftime.
Neither team managed to put any points on the scoreboard in the third quarter. It took until 11:40 in the fourth quarter when the Beavers pulled within one possession, 30-28, following Jefferson's second rushing touchdown of the game.
Nevada responded with a touchdown of their own upping its lead to 37-28 with just over nine minutes left in the game. Kase Rogers scored his first touchdown of his career on a 1-yard strike with 4:40 left to play capping a 4-play 40-yard drive from Oregon State.
The Beavers defense stepped up forcing a three-and-out getting the ball back in the hands of the offense. OSU drove down the field over 11 plays getting the ball to the Nevada 15 yard line. The Beavs came on to attempt the game-winning field goal, but it sailed left of the uprights.
