Beavers Begin Season in Reno
September 12, 2018 | Women's Swimming
20 swimmers will compete against Nevada on Friday
CORVALLIS - Heading into her third year at the helm of the Oregon State University swimming program, head coach Jennifer Buffin leads the Beavers into the 2018 season on the road at the University of Nevada on Friday, September 14th, at 4 p.m. The meet is part of a full weekend of Beaver versus Wolfpack action before the football teams will go head-to-head on Saturday. This meet marks the earliest start to the season since Buffin took over the program.
Â
"We're looking forward to having an opportunity to compete this early in the season," said coach Buffin. "When this was set up between us and Nevada that was really what we were both looking for. We're trying to get our team in the competitive mindset early in the season."
Â
The 2018-19 Beaver roster contains 21 student-athletes, with nine returners and 12 newcomers. Among the returners are juniors Felicia Anderson and Arianna Letrari.
Â
Felicia Anderson, a backstroke and freestyle specialist, set her season best of 54.19 in the 100-back at the 69th Husky Invitational, and recorded five NCAA B-Standards over the course of the season. She also competed at the USA Swimming Nationals in the off season.
Â
Arianna Letrari posted five NCAA B-Standard times last season, including three at the 69th Husky Invitational.
Â
The Beaver newcomers are made up of 10 freshmen and two transfer students. Of the newcomers, all but one will be competing in with the team in their first meet in Reno.
Â
The meet in Reno is specialized as a relay meet, so the Beavers will be taking to the pool in solely relay groups. Â
Â
"(The meet) won't be a traditional format, but we're expecting the team to step up and race." Buffin said. "It's still about points, it's still about getting our hand on the wall first, and it'll be a great opportunity to really evaluate where we are to start the year."
